No. 13 Ducks Squeeze by Tar Heels, 1-0

ORLANDO, Fla. - The No. 13 University of Oregon softball team (15-2) relied on an eighth-inning suicide squeeze to edge North Carolina, 1-0, in the first game of the Citrus Classic at the Disney World ESPN Diamondplex.
With a runner placed on second base because of the extra-inning rule, a pair of bunts by senior Christie Nieto and freshman Alexa Peterson advanced her to third and home, respectively. Pinch-runner and senior Ashley Kivett slid under the throw home in the latter play to keep UO perfect (4-0) against against returning NCAA qualifiers from last season.
On the mound, sophomore Jessica Moore (8-1) struck out 11 - the 13th-best mark in school history and one off her team season high (12) - walked two, and scattered three hits in her eight innings. Her second shutout of 2011 also raised her career tally to seven and tied junior teammate Samantha Skillingstad for 10th all-time for UO.
Moore's counterpart, UNC freshman Lori Spingola, struck out six, walked none, gave up five hits, and no earned runs in her 7.1 innings.
At the plate, senior Kaitlin Vitek (2-for-3) was the lone Duck with multiple hits, while Allie Burger, Kaylan Howard and Kelsey Chambers each logged one hit.
UO stranded five runners in the game, with two others erased on doubled plays in the fifth and sixth inning on a lined bunt and grounder to second base, respectively.
The Tar Heels' clean-up hitter Haleigh Dickey went 2-for-2 at the plate, and also received a semi-intentional walk with a runner on third base and two outs in the sixth inning. One other UNC player, Tisha Mahon, also blooped a hit just to the left of second base.
The Ducks return to action immediately after against another NCAA returnee in Virginia (9-6) on the same field. The Cavaliers lost their opener Friday morning to No. 17 Louisiana-Lafayette, 9-1, in five innings.
