ORLANDO, Fla. - The No. 13 University of Oregon softball team (15-3) suffered a 3-2 loss to Virginia (10-6) to split opening-day action in the Citrus Classic Friday
at the Disney World ESPN Diamondplex.
The returning ACC runners-up scored their first two runs in the fourth inning via less than conventional
methods to end Oregon's five-game win streak.
UVA's opening hitter, Marcy Bowdren, was called out on an grounder to the shortstop, but the first base umpire changed his call moments later and said that the first baseman had not maintained control of the throw in the dirt.
A subsequent wild pitch, walk and sacrifice bunt moved the runners to second and third base when Alex Skinskis hit a fly ball to the left field gap.
Sophomore centerfielder Samantha Pappas raced 40 feet to her right
and appeared capable of making the running catch, but the ball glanced off her glove as she avoided the collision with the left fielder, and the ball fell for a
triple.
An inning later, Oregon sophomore Allie Burger tied
the game, 2-2, with two outs in the fifth when she singled up the middle with the bases loaded after singles by senior Monique Fuiava, junior Christie Nieto and freshman Courtney Ceo.
Virginia answered with the deciding run in the bottom of the seventh inning. Skinkis led
off with a single, tagged and moved to second on a diving catch by freshman catcher Alexa Peterson on a fouled-off sacrifice bunt, then scored on a throwing error by the third baseman on a high
throw to first base on a grounder.
Junior pitcher Samantha
Skillingstad started the game and was relieved after the two-run triple. The Spokane, Wash., native struck out five, walked two, gave up four hits, and both
runs were earned.
Junior Mikayla Endicott (2-2) pitched the final
three innings, struck out two, walked none, allowed two hits and one unearned run.
Cavalier freshman Erica Cipolloni (2-1), struck out one, walked
one, allowed eight hits, and both of her runs allowed were earned in the complete game.
Immediately before Friday morning, UO relied on an eighth-inning suicide squeeze bunt by Peterson to edge North Carolina, 1-0. Sophomore Jessica Moore (8-1) struck out 11, walked two, and scattered three hits in her fourth complete game of the season.
Looking ahead, UO returns to action for the second day of the tournament Saturday and faces No. 17 Louisiana-Lafayette at 9:30 a.m. PT and No. 1 Alabama at 1 p.m. PT (with Eastern Time (local) three hours later).
