Pride Rally Past Ducks in Overtime Thriller
02/21/11 | Women's Lacrosse
EUGENE – Bina Barrett and Jana Drummond combined for nine goals, but the Oregon lacrosse team was unable to hold off a late rally by No. 20 Hofstra in a 12-11 overtime loss at Pape' Field on Sunday.
Barrett tallied a career-high five goals while Drummond finished with four tallies to pace the Ducks' (0-1) attack, but the Pride (1-1) erased a three-goal deficit in the second half to force overtime and rally for the win.
Hofstra drew first blood 2:03 into the game when Claire Brady converted on a free position attempt. After a slow start, Oregon's offense found its rhythm five minutes in as freshman Hayley Milner answered with an unassisted tally of her own to event the score at the 5:09 mark.
From there, Barrett began her career day by giving the Ducks a 2-1 lead at the 5:43 mark and followed with her second goal 16 seconds later to put UO up, 3-1.
The Pride rallied with two goals of their own with under 15 to go in the first half, tying the contest at 3-3. Each team led at various points for the remainder of the period, but the score was knotted up at 6-6 after 30 minutes of play. Play was even across the board in the opening half, with both teams recording 13 shots.
Oregon came out on fire to start the second half, scoring the first three goals of the final regulation period. Drummond scored her third goal of the afternoon four and a half minutes in to give the Ducks the lead and Barrett followed with goals at the 6:08 and 7:40 mark, respectively, to give UO a three-goal bulge.
Once again, the Pride fought back with two-straight goals from Jackie Ardolino to close the deficit to one goal.
Barrett made it 10-8 with under 17 minutes remaining to give the Ducks some breathing room once again. Ardolino answered with another tally five minutes later to make it a one-score game once again.
The Ducks played strong positional defense for the next seven minutes before a pair of red cards, one to Colleen Taggart and another to Alex Breiner, gave the Pride a pair of late free position opportunities. Hofstra converted on the second attempt with a tally by Jennalee Trombley with 4:44 left to tie the game at 10 and send the contest to overtime.
Oregon won the opening draw control of the extra session and held possession for the first three minutes, but a late shot whistled just wide of the goal, keeping the contest tied as the teams switched sides of the field.
The draw control went Hofstra's way to open the final three minutes of the overtime period and Casey Kellogg put the Pride on top with under two minutes left. Stephanie Rice followed with a goal with 50 seconds remaining to make it 12-10.
UO continued to fight on and took the following draw and pulled closer on Drummond's fourth goal of the game with only 21 seconds left. The ensuing draw control started a furious sequence in the closing seconds as Nikki Puszcz won it to start Oregon's possession and the ball ended up on Milner's stick for a last second shot, but Hofstra's Jackie Pandolf made the final of her 11 saves to secure the victory.
Oregon used both Salliebeth Finnegan and Caroline Federighi in goal with Finnegan stopping five of 11 shots in the first half and Federighi turning aside nine of 15 attempts in the second half and overtime.
Hofstra held a 35-28 advantage in shots for the game and went 3-for-10 on free position shots versus Oregon's 1-for-8 mark. The Ducks narrowly edged the Pride in draw controls, 14-13, and scooped up 11 ground balls to the Pride's eight.
Oregon continues its season-opening home stand next weekend when it hosts Fresno State on Feb. 25 at Pape' Field.
