Strowbridge?s Career Day Leads Ducks to Civil War Sweep
02/19/11 | Men's Basketball
EUGENE – Jay-R Strowbridge sure knows how to celebrate a birthday.
The senior guard poured in a career-high 26 points on his 23rd birthday to lead the Oregon men's basketball team to an 82-63 win over arch rival Oregon State at Matthew Knight Arena on Saturday afternoon.
The victory was monumental in multiple ways as it gave the Ducks (14-12, 7-7 Pac-10) a sweep of the Civil War series against the Beavers and moved them into fourth place in the conference standings.
Strowbridge finished a career-best 10-of-16 from the floor and also shot a career-high 6-of-9 from three-point range. Joevan Catron and E.J. Singler joined the senior in double figures with 13 points apiece and Malcolm Armstead dished out a career-high 13 assists against only two turnovers to keep the Ducks' offense rolling. Singler also pulled down a team-best seven rebounds.
Lathen Wallace led OSU (9-16, 4-10 Pac-10) with 17 points off the bench and Joe Burton finished with a game-high eight rebounds.
The Ducks dominated nearly every statistical category, shooting 46.3 percent from the floor and holding the Beavers to 37 percent shooting. UO's biggest advantage came in three-point shooting as it made a season high 13 treys on 26 attempts with OSU countering with a 4-of-21 mark from beyond the arc. Oregon State did win the rebounding battle, 35-28, but Oregon forced 19 turnovers while committing only 11.
A 25-4 run by the Ducks gave them a 27-10 lead midway through the opening frame. After beginning 1-of-5 from the floor, UO made eight-straight shots during the run to erase an early 6-2 deficit. Oregon extended its lead to 18 points, 37-19, with 6:10 remaining in the opening stanza and took a 42-29 lead into the locker room at halftime.
A prolonged Oregon slump allowed Oregon State to make up ground and pull within nine early in the second half on the strength of a 14-5 run. The UO lead was whittled down to eight with 12:14 to go, but Strowbridge would not allow the game to get any closer.
The Huntsville, Ala., native scored 11 straight Oregon points, including three-consecutive trifectas to balloon the Ducks' lead back to 14 points.
The hot shooting spurred an 18-3 run that allowed UO to seize control of the game for good at 68-46. Oregon led by as many as 24 points with 6:10 remaining and its lead was never any closer than 15 points the rest of the way.
Oregon has won four of its last five games to move to .500 in the Pac-10 and is now 4-1 at Matthew Knight Arena.
The Ducks conclude their regular season home slate with two games next week, starting with a Feb. 24 showdown against California.
