Second-Half Slump Dooms Ducks Against Golden Bears
02/25/11 | Men's Basketball
EUGENE – A strong first half was not enough to lift the Oregon men's basketball team above .500 in conference play for the first time this season as California rallied to defeat the Ducks, 81-71, at Matthew Knight Arena on Thursday night.
The loss is only Oregon's (14-13, 7-8) second in the past six games and snaps a brief two game winning streak while California (15-13, 8-8) is now .500 in league play. The loss is only Oregon's second at home since moving to Matthew Knight Arena.
Four Ducks reached double figures in scoring, led by Tyrone Nared's career-high 16 points. Joevan Catron contributed 14 points Oregon's attack, Garrett Sim scored 12 and E.J. Singler poured in 11 more. Catron also led the Ducks with seven rebounds.
Cal got a game-high 23 points out of Jorge Gutierrez as well as 19 from Allen Crabbe and 18 from Brandon Smith.
Oregon went on a 16-4 run early in the first half to make it 17-9 four and a half minutes in. Oregon continued its surge from there and went up 13 on a couple occasions. Joevan Catron and Tyrone Nared each scored 11 points and the Ducks shot 57 percent from the floor. The Ducks led by as many as 16, 40-24, in the opening stanza and took a 45-34 lead into the locker room at the break.
Cal cut a double digit Oregon lead down to three points, 50-47, over five minutes into the second half. A Tyrone Nared putback dunk ended a prolonged UO slump and made it a five-point game once again. Two Golden Bears' three-pointers, one by Jorge Guttierez and another by Allen Crabbe made it a one-point game and a Harper Kamp layup put Cal ahead for the first time since it was 7-6 in the first half.
Teondre Williams answered with a three-pointer to put Oregon back in front at 57-55, but a Kamp free throw put Cal back in front a minute later. Gutierrez drained another three from the top of the key with just over eight minutes left to give the Golden Bears their biggest lead of the night at 61-57.
UO cut the deficit to two three separate times, the last on a Nared baseline jumper to make it 65-63. After a stop, Williams corralled a three-point miss and put it back in to tie it at 65-65.
Cal regained the lead on its next possession as Brandon Smith drained a three from the wing with 4:02 left. A Robert Solomon layup and a pair of Smith free throws made it 72-65 with 2:31 to play. Garrett Sim brought the Ducks within four on the ensuing possession with a deep three, but Crabbe answered with a trey of his own to put the Golden Bears back up seven. The Ducks wouldn't get any closer than three points the rest of the way.
The Ducks shot 50.8 percent from the floor, but the Golden Bears outdid that figure with .549 field goal percentage, including a 15-24 performance in the second half. The Golden Bears also made 10-of-20 (50 percent) three-pointers against the Ducks' 7-of-24 (29.2 percent) mark from long range. Cal held a 29-26 advantage in rebounding and each team turned it over 12 times.
Oregon plays its final regular season home game on Saturday when it hosts Stanford for senior day at 3 p.m. Catron has requested fans to show up wearing white for senior night as he and Jay-R Strowbridge get honored before the game.
