02/27/11 | Men's Basketball
EUGENE – A season-high 22 points out of Malcolm Armstead was not enough to close the Oregon men's basketball team's inaugural regular season at Matthew Knight Arena with a win as Stanford spoiled senior day by tripping up the Ducks, 88-71, on Saturday.
The loss drops the Ducks (14-14, 7-9 Pac-10) back to .500 on the season with their first consecutive losses in over a month.
Armstead also dished out a team-best six assists and had five steals in the game. He was joined in double figures by Jay-R Strowbridge (16 points) and Johnathan Loyd (11 points). E.J. Singler led the Ducks with six rebounds.
Stanford had five players in double figures, led by Josh Owens' 31, the highest individual total Oregon has yielded this season. The Cardinal also got 15 points from Jeremy Green, 13 from Aaron Bright, 12 out of Anthony Brown and 11 from Josh Powell. Owens and Powell each recorded double-doubles with 11 rebounds apiece.
Oregon started out on fire, scoring the first eight points and making seven of its first 11 shots from the floor. Stanford heated up and went on a 14-3 run to turn an 18-13 deficit into a 27-21 lead midway through the opening stanza. At one point, the Cardinal made eight shots in a row and finished the first half 17-of-31 from the floor (54.8 percent) to take a 43-34 lead into the break.
SU's Owens was the story of the first half, scoring Stanford's first seven points en route to a game-high 17 in the first half. Armstead led the Ducks with nine points in the opening frame.
The Cardinal's shooting was even more lethal in the second half as they connected on 15-of-23 attempts (65.3 percent) and led by as many as 20 points in the final stanza. SU scored the first six points of the second half and its lead was never less than 13 points the rest of the way.
Stanford shot 59.3 percent for the game and Oregon finished at 36.7 percent from the floor. Oregon shot considerably better from three-point range, connecting on 10-of-25 (40 percent) from beyond the arc, though Stanford finished an efficient 7-of-15 (46.7 percent). The Cardinal held a decisive, 36-21, advantage in rebounding while the Ducks forced 16 turnovers and committed only 10 themselves. Oregon made 17 of its 19 free throws (89.5 percent) while Stanford finished 17-of-23 (73.9 percent).
There are two games remaining in the regular season and Oregon returns to the court on March 3 when it travels to Arizona State.
