Oregon 66, Arizona State75
March 03, 2011 - Matthew Knight Arena
--------------------------------------------
Oregon Head Coach Paul Westhead
Addressing the question of if the team ran out of steam at the end:
“We tried to give some key players minutes in the end, but players weren't tired so it was other factors.”
On the slow start in the first half:
“We had three or four schemes to avoid overplay action but we coughed it up before we even got to our schemes.”
On the high defensive pressure of Arizona State:
“We knew it was coming. We needed to handle it better.”
On sophomore guard Laura Stanulis:
“She is a nice safety valve we have. She gave us a couple of good minutes.”
On the game:
“They weren't burning us offensively. We just didn't take advantage of it.”
On the hustle of the Ducks:
“They get after it pretty good but they have to get the missed shots on the other end.”
--------------------------------------------
Junior Forward Amanda Johnson
On the game:
“We came out tentative tonight because they are a very aggressive team. But then we came out with some intensity and aggression.”
On how Arizona State won in the end:
“They got some key offensive boards and drew fouls in the last minutes. (Kimberly) Brandon also scored two three pointers that were key to their win as well.”
On how they stepped up in the second half:
“We didn't come out with energy in the first half. It's very frustrating to have that. In the second half I just tried to come out with energy and passion.”
--------------------------------------------
Freshman Guard Ariel Thomas
On the game:
“They (Arizona State) slowed us down, we got rattled by their defense in the first half, but in the second half we played with fire and got our fast pace going.”
“We out-rebounded them during the whole game, which is good for us.”
On mindset as a freshman leader:
“The Coaches got after me at halftime, telling me this isn't the type of play they recruited me for. So I had to go for it and play my fast pace and put up the shots. Coach (Westhead) gives us the green light to shoot so we have to take it.”
On what's next:
“We need intensity to win Saturday and maintain intensity throughout the game. We have spurts of great basketball, because we have the pieces, but we just need to play with intensity the whole game.”
