03/25/10 | Women's Lacrosse
NEWARK, Del. - Delaware's Corrine Drost scored the game-winning goal with 23 seconds left to play and the Oregon lacrosse team dropped a thriller, 12-11, on Thursday afternoon to the Blue Hens.
With 1:04 left in the game and the score knotted up at 11, Oregon's Jess Drummond was whistled for a yellow card which sent her off the field and gave Delaware a man-up situation. The Blue Hens took advantage, as Drost scored her 10th goal of the season unassisted with time running out. The Ducks managed to secure the draw control after the goal but could not get in position to take a shot and force overtime.
Oregon was led offensively by Jana Drummond's three goals, including 2-of-4 on free position shots. Freshman Maggie Kovacs scored twice and has at least one goal in all but one game this season for the Ducks. Catherine Davidson returned from an early season injury to net two goals in a reserve role, her first scores of the year. In the net freshman Salliebeth Finnegan made 10 saves, the thrid time in four games she has recorded double-digit saves - the only game she didn't was when she had nine against Cincinnati.
The Ducks got a team-high three ground balls from Colleen Taggart, team-best three draw controls from Alex Breiner and a pair of caused turnovers by Lara Bennett.
Delaware was led by Emily Schaknowski's three goals and Makenzi Worthington's four saves in the net. The Ducks are now 0-2 all-time against the Blue Hens, with each game being decided by just one goal. Oregon lost to Delaware 6-5 last season on March 26.
In team stats, Oregon edged Delaware in ground balls (18-16) and saves (10-4) while the Blue Hens had the advantage in shots (29-17), draw controls (16-9), fouls (15-17) and turnovers (17-20). The teams were all square in clears (11-of-16) and free position shots (4-of-6).
Oregon will be back in action in a hurry, traveling to Baltimore, Md. to play Johns Hopkins on Saturday. The Ducks are 1-3 all time against JHU, but defeated the perennial lacrosse power 12-10 last season at home in a driving rain. The rain forced the game to be moved inside Autzen Stadium due to poor conditions at Pape' Field. It was the first time the Ducks played a home game on the turf. Oregon rounds out its spring break road trip with a game at Florida on Tuesday.
