UO Soccer Wins Fifth Straight Match
09/20/09 | Women's Soccer
Junior forward Jen Stoltenberg scored the game-winner in the 47th minute in The University of Oregon soccer team's 1-0 neutral-site win over Dartmouth Sunday in Corvallis, Ore. The victory was the Ducks' fifth straight improving their season mark to 6-1-1 overall. DU fell to 3-3-0 with the loss.
UO hasn't lost a match since its Aug. 22 season-opening defeat at the hands of then fourth-ranked Portland (currently ranked No. 2).
"Our team was patient and persistent in our attack," head coach Tara Erickson said of the win. "I think we've learned, from some of our previous games, how to manage the game."
Stoltenberg's goal, her sixth of the season, started when senior defender Dani Oster sent a crossing pass into the box which was deflected by Dartmouth goalkeeper Colleen Hogan. Stoltenberg fought off defenders for the loose ball, and scored from eight yards out.
"Dani served in a great cross. It was a good build-up, with Stolt able to finish it off," Erickson said of the game-winning goal. "We had some really nice build-ups throughout the game.
"They presented an interesting challenge in their 4-5-1," Erickson said of Dartmouth's formation. "It was good for us to solve that, something different than what we are used to."
Sophomore goalkeeper Cody Miles and all four Oregon defenders – seniors Oster and Danielle Sweeney, junior Mercedes Walters and freshman Nicole Bakke – played the duration of the match. Miles had one save while facing a total of seven shots in earning a third shutout of the season and ninth of her career.
"Great play from Mercedes Walters at the back. She really held it down and helped us to get the shutout in terms of her organization and team management," Erickson said.
The Ducks out-shot Dartmouth 13-7, including a 7-4 advantage in the second half. Both teams had four corner kicks in the match, while Dartmouth was whistled for 15 fouls to Oregon's six.
Stoltenberg took a match-high six shots, two of which were on goal. Junior midfielder Bree Rowe and freshman midfielder Scout Libke each had two shots with one on goal. Junior forward Rianna Mansfield added a pair of shots in 56 minutes of work.
Dartmouth was led statistically by midfielder Myra Sack who tallied a team-best four shots, one on goal. Hogan played the full 90 minutes, recording three saves and one goal allowed.
Oregon (6-1-1) returns to action Friday, Sept. 25, with a home match against Portland State. Match-time is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Pape' Field in Eugene.
Notes: Stoltenberg extended her matches with a point streak to seven. She has scored five of UO's six game-winning goals this season, with that total (5) already ranking third all-time for game-winners in a single-season at UO (record is 9 set by Nicole Garbin in 2006). Career wise, Stoltenberg remains fourth all-time in points (43 pts, 17 g, 9 a) and holds in fifth all-time in goals (17) and shots (118).
