Ducks Deal Denver First MPSF Loss in Nearly Three Years
04/05/09 | Women's Lacrosse
DENVER -- Youth continues to be served for the University of Oregon women's lacrosse team.
Despite, or more accurately, because of the fact the Ducks' roster includes 14 freshmen and four sophomores, UO pulled off the biggest regular season upset in Mountain Pacific Sports Federation play in nearly three years.
Sophomore Alex Breiner led all players with five points and freshman Catherine Davidson netted a hat trick, including her league best fourth game-winning goal, to push the Ducks (9-3, 3-1 MPSF) past the Pioneers (8-5, 2-1) on senior day at Peter Barton Stadium.
The loss for DU was its first in a regular season league contest since April 15, 2006, and its first in seven all-time meetings against the Ducks.
Karen Morton had a hat trick for the home side, becoming DU's all-time leading scorer in the process with 232 points.
Denver jumped on the board quickly, as Morton scored on a pass from fellow senior Megan Carver 1:45 into the contest.
However, Breiner, who led the Ducks with four goals, scored the first two of five straight Oregon goals during a six-minute stretch.
UO failed to sustain its momentum as DU tied the game heading into the break with a 5-1 run in the final 7:27 of the opening period.
Davidson got rolling after halftime and scored all three of her goals during a 5-1 surge by the Ducks for an 11-7 lead.
A pair of late strikes from Ali Flury during the final 1:30 closed the gap.
Goalie Anna Poponyak made 11 saves in a game that featured snow, wind gusts and a 30-degree temperature throughout.
The Ducks return home for their own senior day, April 11, when they host non-confernce foe Virginia Tech at 1 p.m. on Pape' Field.
