Ducks Dominate Washington State
02/21/09 | Women's Tennis
EUGENE, Ore. - The No. 46 Oregon women's tennis team took care of business against No. 59 Washington State on Friday afternoon inside the Student Tennis Center, defeating the Cougars, 7-0, in decisive fashion. The Ducks took the doubles point and five singles matches to lock down the win.
The Ducks improved to 6-2 with the win while Washington State fell to 3-6.
The match did not count against the teams' Pac-10 record but did register in the squad's overall season mark. Oregon and Washington State meet on March 13 in Pullman, Wash. for the true conference match.
Oregon had great play from all of its student-athletes on Friday, but senior Claudia Hirt shined brightest. Hirt played in her first singles match of the season after dealing with injury for the early part of the 2009 duals campaign. The native of Lucerne, Switzerland showed little if any rust in her first singles action, winning 6-1, 6-2 at No. 6 singles over Jessica Gomez.
Carmen Seremeta had a strong showing at No. 1 singles, winning 6-2, 6-4 over Ekaterina Kamendova and paired with UO freshman Trudie du Toit for the first time in an 8-5 win at No. 3 doubles.
Siobhan Cavan and Madelie Janse van Rensburg each needed
third-set tiebreakers to wintheir matches. Janse van Rensburg won a
10-point tiebreaker 10-6 to win her No. 4 singles match 4-6, 6-2 (10-6)
while Cavan won her match in even tighter fashion, 6-3, 5-7 (11-9). Pavlina Smatova also won in a 10-point third set, taking down Elisabeth Fournier 6-2, 7-6 (11-9).
The
Ducks will battle No. 39 ranked Ohio State on Sunday at the Student
Tennis Center at Noon. The Buckeyes and Cougars will play a neutral
site match on Saturday at the STC.

The Oregon women's tennis team will look to continue its early season success in a match against regional rival Washington State at the Student Tennis Center behind Mac Court.
Today's
match will be an interesting opportunity for the Ducks to see a
Pac-10 opponent without the match counting in the conference standings.
