11/07/09 | Women's Soccer
The University of Oregon soccer team scored three first-half goals en route to a 5-1 road win over Arizona Friday night in Pac-10 Conference play in Tucson, Ariz. The Ducks improved to 9-9-1 overall and 1-7-0 in league play. The Wildcats dropped to 4-14-1 on the year, 1-7-0 in conference action.
The Ducks got two goals and an assist from both junior forward Jen Stoltenberg and freshman midfielder Scout Libke, while senior midfielder Teresa Bowns added her fourth goal of the season in the win.
"We were very opportunistic tonight," head coach Tara Erickson said. "It was a good team effort. We got a lot of bodies in the game today which was great."
Stoltenberg gave the Duck's the early lead scoring a goal in the 20th minute, assisted by junior midfielder Bree Rowe. Eight minutes later Stoltenberg scored again, this time assisted by Libke. The goal was Stoltenberg's 10th of the season and 21st of her career.
Libke put the Ducks up 3-0 in the 38th minute on a goal assisted by senior defender Danielle Sweeney. The Ducks took the three-goal lead into halftime. UO out-shot Arizona, 9-2, over the first 45 minutes of the match.
Rowe opened the second half by recording her second assist of the contest when she found Bowns for a goal in the 57th minute.
Arizona scored its only goal of the match in the 69th minute, cutting the lead to 4-1 on a score by Macke Mutz which was assisted by Samantha Drees.
Libke finished the match off with a goal in the 78th minute, assisted by Stoltenberg, giving the Ducks the 5-1 advantage.
UO was led offensively by Stoltenberg and Libke who both recorded five points in the match. All three of Libke's shots were on target, while Stoltenberg had two of her three shots on goal. Bowns scored a goal on her only shot of the match.
"We were convincing with both our shots and I liked the number of shots on goal we had," Erickson said. "Stoltenberg had a great game. All of our attacking players did well."
Oregon finished the match with a 13-6 lead in shots, while both teams had three corner kicks and nine fouls apiece. Eleven of the Ducks' 13 shots were on goal, leading to six Arizona saves. The Ducks goalkeepers combined for two saves in the match.
Senior Jessie Proulx and sophomore Cody Miles both played 45 minutes in goal for the Ducks. Proulx faced two shots during the first half, while Miles had two saves and one goal allowed in facing six total shots during the second half.
Twenty different Ducks saw action in the match. Freshman Tahne Apo started her second match of the season on the back line moving fellow frosh Nicole Bakke to the midfield as a starter.
"We had three freshmen with key contributions," Erickson said. "Scout, obviously with her two goals. Tahne Apo got a start at left back and played really well, and Nicole Bakke played really well as our wide right player. Those three did a great job to set the tone of the beginning."
The Wildcats had five players record a shot in the match, with Mutz scoring a goal on her only shot.
Oregon (9-9-1, 1-7-0) will play its regular-season finale on Sunday at Arizona State, with match time set for Noon (PST). The Sun Devils defeated Oregon State 1-0 on Friday night in Tempe, Ariz.
