
Oregon Starts Season Strong, Defeats Idaho 6-1

EUGENE, Ore. - Oregon came out strong against Idaho, winning the doubles point and then taking five of six matches in singles play to win its first match of the season, 6-1, at the Oregon Tennis Complex.
Pavlina Smatova, after missing last season due to NCAA age restrictions, looked very strong in her Oregon debut. The sophomore won 8-2 in doubles with teammate Ana Cecilia Olivos and took her No. 2 singles match by a score of 6-0, 6-4.
The Oregon freshmen also shined, with Trudie du Toit and Madelie Janse van Rensburg teaming up to win at doubles and then both winning at singles in dominating fashion.

No. 1 - UO Ana Cecilia Olivos/Pavlina Smatova vs. IDAHO Maria Perevoshchikova/Silvia Irimescu (Oregon wins, 8-2)
9:13 - Center court is where the action is thus far in the match, with Ceci and Pavlina jumping out to a two point lead at No. 1 doubles ... 9:18 - Oregon's No. 1 doubles team has taken the third point heading into the break ...9:30 - Ceci and Pavlina are marching ahead, surrendering their first point of the match to the Vandals but taking the fifth point to push their lead to 4-1 ... 9:45 - Oregon is on the verge of putting away at least one point in doubles, with Ceci and Pavlina winning 6-1 and on the verge of taking their seventh point ... 9:58 - Ducks are up 7-2 at center court, but down 40-love in the 10th point ... 10:04 - In a stunning rally, Oregon fought back to take the advantage and ice their first point of the day with an 8-2 Oregon winner!
No. 2 - UO Carmen Seremeta/Claudia Hirt vs. IDAHO Basia Maciocha/Jana Siwa (Oregon wins, 8-3)
9:14 - On court one, Carmen and Claudia took the first point but the second point is proving to be more difficult to obtain ... 9:23 - After a long battle for the second point, Idaho snatched the third point in much quicker fashion, building a 2-1 lead over Oregon ... 9:28 - Carmen and Claudia have responded, snatching the next two points to jump back to a 3-2 lead ... 9:40 - Claudia and Carmen are really starting to put away the match, playing far more consistently than their opponents and the 5-2 score is a direct reflection of it ... 9:42 - Claudia has been a beast at the net thus far, slamming back any ball within her reach ... 9:55 - Both teams have tallied a point since my last update, with the score sitting at 6-3 ... 10:07 - While the scoreboard still shows 6-3 (come on ref!) the Ducks have taken their second match in doubles and have secured the always important doubles point with an 8-3 win at No. 2 doubles.

9:15 - In an interesting move, head coach Paul Reber has paired both of his true freshmen at No. 3 doubles for their first collegiate match ... 9:17 - After losing the first point, Trudie and Madelie have evened up the match at 1-1 ... 9:22 - The young Ducks are starting to roll, taking the third point quickly to post a 2-1 lead ... 9:29 - Oregon continues to hold a one point lead with the score now sitting at 3-2 ... 9:41 - The sixth point is still being decided ... 9:55 - After a long sixth point, the action has picked up temendously with the scoring now at 6-4 in favor of Madelie and Trudie ... 10:08 - Everyone is huddled around court three, where Oregon's freshmen duo has just taken then advantage with a 7-5 lead over their opponents ... 10:09 - Trudie finished off the match with a nice drop shot that she scoped right off the floor and Oregon sweeps the doubles action with an 8-5 win at No. 3 doubles.

10:45 - The most interesting match of the day has, not surprisingly, turned out to be at No. 1 singles - with Seremeta holding the lead in a 3-2 battle ... 10:56 - The Ducks seem to have this battle against Idaho locked up, but don't tell the ladies at center court as the first set is tied up 4-4 ... 11:05 - Oregon lost a set for the first time today, as Carmen lost 4-6 in the first frame ... 11:45 - With her teammates cheering her on, Seremeta is making a match of it in the second set with the score now tied at 4-4 ... 11:49 - After tying it up, Idaho pulled out their only win of the day, taking the No. 1 singles match 6-4, 6-4.
No. 2 Smatova/Irimescu (Oregon wins 6-0, 6-4)
10:48 - Pavlina, after sitting out last season due to an NCAA ruling, has come out on fire in her first duals singles match, leading 5-0 at No. 2 singles ... 10:53 - Smatova skunked her opponent in the first set, with a 6-0 victory ... 11:06 - Pavlina is still firing on all cylinders, as she is up 3-0 in the second set after sweeping her first frame ... 11:12 - Smatova is getting more of a challenge as of late from Irimescu, as the Oregon sophomore has surrendered two straight points to bring the score to 3-2 ... 11:20 - Pavlina regrouped well and took the next point to build her lead back to two points, 4-2 ...11:23 - A very fast point for Smatova, as she is now up 5-2 in the second set and looking for the victory ... 11:43 - After a missing the chance to seal a victory on her first match point, Smatova pulled out the win in her second chance, with a 6-0, 6-4 win.
No. 3 Janse van Rensburg/Ulesanu (Oregon wins, 6-0, 6-1)
10:41 - The freshmen are dominating today for the Ducks, as Madelie has also jumped out to a 4-0 lead in her first collegiate singles match ... 10:48 - Madelie blazed through her first set, earning the bagel in a 6-0 shutout victory in set one ... 10:59 - Madelie has continued her dominance in the second set, with a 3-0 lead and the match thoroughly in hand ... 11:06 - Madelie just surrendered her first singles point, as she is now up 4-1 in the second set ... 11:15 - Just a minute after Cavan wins, Madelie puts away her match in nearly perfect fashion, 6-0, 6-1 in her first collegiate singles match.
