Eugene, Ore.,-- The women came out with fresh legs Sunday morning defeating the Pacific Tigers 5-2 at the Student Tennis Center. The Ducks (4-2) finished a great weekend after beating No. 42 Boise State Wednesday but dropped to No. 58 St. Mary's Friday afternoon.
"Obviously we would have liked to win all three matches but the big win for us this weekend was Boise State. They're a great team and compete well and it was just a good win for us," head coach Paul Reber said.
Anna Powaska, who moved into the No. 2 spot for Friday and Sunday's matches continues to prove herself as the leader on the team and set her senior example. She is now 5-1 in singles play.
"Anna Powaska is playing fantastic tennis. She's really worked her butt off to get where she's playing the No .2 spot right now and I really think she's just the highlight of this team right now."
The Ducks had a nice turnaround in doubles after Friday's match, sweeping their doubles matches today and took the lead early Sunday morning.
"Saturday at practice we really wanted to focus on being more agressive," coach Reber explains. "We've been too passive recently and we want to look to be more agressive and be able to dictate points, but we'll continue to get stronger."
Olivos and Seremeta teamed up today and finished first in the No.2 spot defeating Svenja Arens and Kate Nezhura 8-5. Celine Rolly and Stephanie Macfarlane competing in the No. 1 spot were also victorious today beating Jolanta Twarowska and Olga Gumenyuk 8-5.
Anna Powaska and Siobhan Cavan were last to finish up in the the No. 3 spot. They won their match in a tiebreak 8-7(3) after Oregon had already won the doubles point. They deafeated Sasha Fisher and Clara Schuhmacher.
Celine Rolly can add one more in the win column for her singles play. In the No. 1 spot she's now 4-2 after defeating Jolanta Twarowska 7-5, 6-3. Macfarlane came back strong today after her first lost yesterday. She finished in two quick sets beating Kate Nezhura 6-1, 6-2.
Siobhan Cavan won her match 6-1, 7-6, (8-6) defeating Clara Schuhmacher and Anna Powaska was last on the courts but came away victorious again 7-6, 5-7, (10-3).
The Tigers, however, didn't leave scoreless. Olga Gumenyuk defeated Carmen Seremeta who moved down to the No. 3 spot 1-6, 6-4, 6-2. Sasha Fisher also came away with a victory defeating Mimi Songsermsawas in the No. 6 spot 7-6, 6-4.
