WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Senior transfer Brooke Dieringer tried to rally the Ducks, scoring three goals late in the contest, but No. 20 Oregon was unable to complete the comeback as they fell, 11-8, to No. 10 Georgetown Friday afternoon at Multi-Sport Field.
Dieringer, the transfer from North Carolina, led the Ducks in scoring on the afternoon, as she converted all three of the her shot attempts.
The Ducks jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the contest, as Jen May tallied an unassisted goal at 4:08 and Oregon immediately followed 18 seconds later with another goal. After winning the draw control, Kate Fleming fed a streaking Alison Leiner who buried the game's second goal.
May also tallied another goal and an assist, tying Dieringer for the team lead in points with three. Ilsa van den Berg was held to only one goal for the first time this year, and Kate Fleming added the other goal for the Ducks.
After exchanging goals, the Ducks still held their two goal lead until the 17:52 mark, when Georgetown's All-American Coco Stanwick ignited the Georgetown attack getting a free position attempt past Oregon goalkeeper Anna Poponyak. Stanwick tallied the tying goal less than five minutes later for the second of five straight Hoya goals. The senior finished the game with six goals and one assist, also controlling five draws.
"We played well to open the game and we had some early momentum," head coach Jen Larsen said. "But I give alot of credit to Georgetown as they were able to make adjustments to get on a run and then hold us off late."
Poponyak, even giving up 11 goals, was instrumental to keeping the Ducks in the game as she made 14 saves on the afternoon, more than she had made in the four previous games combined (12), as the Hoyas outshot the Ducks 39-13.
Georgetown also controlled 14 of the 21 draws on the afternoon, while the Ducks turned the ball over 24 times.
With the loss, the Ducks fall to 4-2 on the year, while the Hoyas even their record at 1-1.
The Ducks take on the University of Maryland Baltimore County on Sunday at 9 a.m.
