CHAPEL HILL -- Four different Ducks tallied goals, but the top-ranked North Carolina Tar Heels rolled to a 16-4 victory in a non-conference match Friday afternoon. The loss was the first of the year for the No. 20 Ducks (2-1, 2-0 MPSF), while UNC moved to 2-0.
Juniors Jenny Browne, Kate Fleming and Theresa Waldron and redshirt sophomore Alison Leiner scored the Ducks goals on the afternoon.
Leiner tallied the first goal of the match for the Ducks, at the 20:12 mark, but the Tar Heels would go on an 11-0 run to put the game out of reach for the Ducks. Carolina closed the first half on an 8-0 run and then scored the first three goals after the break to put the game out of reach. Waldron would break the Heel run with 13:28 left in the game and Browne and Fleming would score late goals for the Ducks for the final margin.
Senior Brooke Dieringer, a former Tar Heel who has transferred to Oregon for the 2006 season, had an assist for the Ducks.
Freshman Kristen Taylor led the Tar Heels with three goals while freshman Megan Bosica and junior Erica LaGrow both had two goals and an assist for Carolina.
Oregon goalkeeper Anna Poponyak had an off game, allowing ten goals and making only one save. Poponyak was leading the conference in goals against average and had only given up 8 goals on the season before today.
The Ducks continue their road trip as they take on the Davidson Wildcats on Sunday at Noon EST.
