Oregon Bucked by the Broncos, 5-2

SANTA CLARA, Calif -- Sophomore Gustavo Loza returned to the lineup for the Ducks but was unable to provide any help as the Ducks fell 5-2 to the No. 73 Santa Clara Broncos in a dual match played Saturday afternoon. The win was the fourth in a row for the Broncos, as they moved to 7-4 on the year. With the loss the Ducks fall to 6-3.
Even with Loza, one of the stalwarts in doubles play last year, the Ducks were unable to gain any momentum in the dual as they lost the doubles point to begin the match and could only gain victories in two singles matches.
Freshman Marcos Verdasco played exceptionally at the No. 1 spot as he seems to have regained his early season form that earned him the top spot in the lineup, as he bested Bronco Senior Jan Macek, 1-6, 6-1, 6-1.
Sophomore Mike Myrhed would be the only other Duck to pick up a victory as he defeated Robert Gallman, 7-6, 6-7, (6).
"I'm proud of the way the guys played in what turned out to be a very hostile enviroment," director of tennis Nils Schyllander said. "We very easily could have folded, but we played well all things considered."
Freshman Geoff Embry's remarkable undefeated run was finally ended as well for the Ducks, as he fell to Bobby Rasmussen, 6-4, 6-1. With the loss the Phoenix, Ariz. native falls to 8-1 on the year.
Belgian Alex Cornelissen battled throughout his match, but ultimately fell in a match decided entirely by tiebreakers against Brian Brogan, 6-7, 7-6, (8).
The Ducks return to action on Friday as they head to Seattle to take on the rival Washington Huskies in a non-conference dual.
