CORVALLIS, Ore. ? For the second straight season, the No. 19 University of Oregon volleyball team walked out of Gill Coliseum with a sweep (30-23, 30-21, 30-20) over Oregon State on Friday night as part of the 2007-08 Northwest Dodge Civil War Series.
The Ducks snap their four match losing streak, and improve to 15-6 on the year and 4-5 in the Pacific-10. The Beavers, who knocked off then fourth-ranked UCLA a week ago, fall to 9-12 overall and 2-7 in conference.
“It is always exciting to play a rival,” Oregon head coach Jim Moore said. “We knew Oregon State was coming off a big win, but our players had a lot of drive. The last few days of practice went very well and all that hard work paid off tonight.”
Oregon hit .366 in the match, led by three players in double figures; Gorana Maricic (15 kills), Sonja Newcombe (15 kills) and Heather Meyers (13 kills).
For Newcombe, who added 10 digs, it was the Lake Arrowhead, Calif., native's sixth double-double of the year. She also hit .433 on the night, followed by Forristall and Meyers, who each hit .417, respectively.
Junior Katie Swoboda added a match-high 18 digs.
In game one, the Ducks jumped out to a 5-0 lead, spreading around the offense as four different players recorded kills. Oregon hit .500 in the game, while Swoboda tallied seven digs.
With the score at 20-19, Meyers racked up three kills during the next seven points played, helping Oregon take a 26-20 lead. Newcombe recorded the last two points for the Ducks.
In game two, Oregon took advantage early and ahead 16-10, increased the lead to double digits after two kills, a block and OSU error. Game point was achieved on a service ace from Meyers.
QUICK QUACKS: Oregon leads the series 57-40-1...the Ducks have now recorded victories in three consecutive matches against the Beavers, sweeping OSU twice...Oregon is now 14-2 in three-game matches this year...the teams will meet again at McArthur Court on Nov. 16.
