02/08/06 | Men's Golf
Waikoloa, Hawaii. ? Sophomores Derek Sipe and Joey Benedetti both shot solid rounds of even-par but the Ducks sat tied for 19th place after the first round of the Hawaii-Hilo Intercollegiate played Wednesday at the par-71 Waikoloa Village Golf Course in Waikoloa, Hawaii.
Both Sipe and Benedetti matched the course par with rounds of 71, but Benedetti would have the stronger front nine (34), while Sipe would be the only Duck not to shoot 37 on the back nine, carding a 34. Both sit tied for 45th place in the individual competition.
Junior Matt Ma recorded a round of 1-over, 72 for the third best round by a Duck. The Aiea, Hawaii native sits tied for 65th place after shooting a strong front nine (35) and a respectable back nine (37).
Seniors Gregg LaVoie and Justin St. Clair rounded out the scoring for the Ducks. St. Clair shot a 3-over round of 74 and sits tied for 86th while LaVoie, the 2005 All-American, would card a round of 77 and sit tied for 98th.
"It was nice to see the young guys step up and have pretty solid rounds," Coach Steve Nosler said. "But we need our seniors to start out stronger and lead this team."
Oklahoma State University's Pablo Martin took the first round lead, shooting 7-under-par, 64.
In the team competition, Georgia Tech (268) has a four-stroke lead over 2nd place Oklahoma State (272). USC sits in third place (274), Hawaii in fourth (275), Pepperdine in fifth (277), and Washington, Oklahoma and Texas are tied for sixth (279). Arizona State and Augusta State sit tied for ninth (280), while Fresno State sits in 11th (281), TCU in 12th (282), and rounding out the top-15 are Colorado, UC Davis and Oregon State (283). Stanford and Arkansas are tied for 16th (284), Rhode Island sits in 18th (287) and Oregon sits tied for 19th place with host Hawaii-Hilo (288). Kansas sits in last place (296).
"I hope that this veteran group can come out strong early in their rounds tomorrow and we can move up the leaderboard," Nosler said. "This is a tough field and we need to show that we can hang with these guys."
