
Sipe Leads Oregon at Duck Invitational

JUNCTION CITY, Ore. ? No. 22 San Diego State fired a 10-under 278 in the second round Monday to take a seven stroke lead over Oregon State heading to Tuesday's final round of the Oregon Duck Invitational.
Playing on a cool and overcast day at the 6,807-yard, par-72 Shadow Hills Country Club, the Aztecs shot rounds of 288-278 for a 566 total. Oregon State had a 573 with rounds of 285-288. Wyoming was third at 580, followed by Washington State at 581 and Nevada at 584.
Host Oregon got a 1-over 289 in the morning round, but struggled in the afternoon with a 297 and was sixth at 586. Sophomore Derek Sipe led Oregon with rounds of 69-73 for a 2-under 142. The Yorba Linda, Calif., native was one of six golfers tied for fourth at 2-under.
Ryan Witz of Washington State blazed to a tournament-best 68 in the afternoon round and, coupled with his morning 71, led the field at 5-under 139. Aaron Goldberg of San Diego State and Mitch Gillis of Oregon State were tied for second at 141.
The Ducks also received solid performances from Gregg LaVoie and Dustin Pewarchuk. LaVoie, a senior from Pasco, Wash., had rounds of 72-73 and was tied for 15th 1-over 145. Pewarchuk, a junior from Vancouver, B.C., had consistent rounds of 73-73 for a 2-over 146 total that was tied for 23rd.
But Oregon had trouble at its final two spots with freshman Landon Banks shooting a 9-over 153 and junior Jay Snyder carding a 16-over 160.
"We've got to get our act together tomorrow," said Oregon coach Steve Nosler. "We could still catch just about everyone ahead of us, but it's up to us to make a move on them."
Tuesday's final round will begin at 8 a.m. and is open to the public. Admission is free.
Several golfers competing individually for Oregon recorded season-low rounds, including senior Chris Dukeminier, who tied his career low with a 69 in the morning round. The Eugene, Ore., native and Sheldon High School graduate followed his 69 with an afternoon 76 and was tied for 15th at 1-over 145.
Sophomore Joey Benedetti was tied for 26th at 147, while senior Kyle Johnson was tied for 30th at 148. Johnson, from North Bend, Ore., carded a 73 in the morning, which was his lowest round since last season's Pac-10 championships.
