STANFORD, Calif -- Foluke Akinradewo and Cynthia Barboza combined for 19 kills as the sophomore duo led the No. 3 Cardinal past the Ducks 3-0 (30-20, 30-18, 30-18), Friday night in Maples Pavillion, ending the longest conference winning streak in school history for Oregon at four games.
Coming off the stunning upset of No. 8 California, the Ducks could not put together any sort of meaningful charge against the Pac-10's top team. A night after five Ducks tallied 10 kills or more, none were able to repeat the feat against the talented Cardinal block. Senior Erin Little led the Ducks with eight kills and sophomore Sonja Newcombe added seven as they were also the only Ducks to hit a positive hitting percentage.
"We still feel like it was a sucessful weekend," head coach Jim Moore said. "Stanford is a really good team and you can't beat a team of Stanford's caliber making the amount of errors that we did tonight."
Sophomore libero Katie Swoboda recorded a match-high 17 digs on the evening and junior Karen Waddington paced the team with eight blocks.
Stanford played like the team that many expect will finish the season deep within the NCAA tournament, as only one Cardinal had a negative hitting percentage on the night. All-American settter Bryn Kehoe tallied 30 assists on the night and Akinradewo paced the Stanford block with nine stops.
"We had too many hitting errors on the night, for seemingly no reason," Moore said. "But we'll definitely take these results over this weekend and continue to build on them."
The Ducks return to the state to face the Oregon State Beavers in the Civil War presented by your Northwest Dodge Dealers on Friday, October 27.
