EUGENE, Ore. ? The Ducks needed four wins in singles play against Boise State to overcome missing out on the doubles point and win the match 4-3, Saturday at the Student Tennis Center.
“We played well against a very tough team,” head coach Nils Schyllander said. “We knew they were good.”
The Ducks lost the doubles point winning only one of three matches. The No. 49 ranked team of Dominika Dieskova and Ceci Olivos won their match defeating the Bronco tandem of Hadley MacFarlane and Megan Biorkman, 8-4. In the other matches Anna Leksinska and Claudia Hirt battled back from a 5-1 deficit, but fell 8-5 to Tatiana Ganzha and Alanah Carroll. At No. 3 Anna Powaska and Carmen Seremeta fought hard but couldn't defeat the tough team of Tiffany Coll and Jana Mackova.
“For whatever reason I felt like the team was pressing too much in doubles and we weren't able to overcome some easy mistakes,” Schyllander said. “Missing the doubles point we knew we had to fight that much harder in singles and we got some big wins.”
Facing tough Bronco senior MacFarlane in her singles match was a daunting task for true freshman Olivos. Olivos was unable to find an offense in the tough straight sets loss, 6-1, 6-2.
Carmen Seremeta came through for the Ducks closing the gap to 2-1 when she won her match against Carroll in straight sets, 6-1, 6-3. Minutes later Anna Leksinska tied the match at 2 when she took a straight sets victory of her own over Jana Mackova, 6-2, 6-4.
Leksinska's big win was followed by another victory for a Duck freshman as Claudia Hirt rallied in the early stages of the first set to win 7-6 in a tiebreak over Coll. Hirt then owned the second set as she rolled to a 6-1 victory to give Oregon a 3-2 lead with Dominika Dieskova tied at 5 all in her second set.
Anna Powaska was unable to get rolling in her match a tough 6-1, 6-2 loss to Tatiana Ganzha. The match was tied at 3 with Dieskova holding a 6-5 lead in her second set, with Biorkman set to serve.
Dieskova broke Biorkman and won her match 6-3, 7-5. The win at No. 1 gave Oregon a 4-3 victory over a tough, deep Boise State squad.
“I knew I had to win my match, I loved having the crowd behind me,” Dieskova said. “I knew I had to break her serve and I just focused and tried to play it ball-to-ball and score points.”
The Ducks return to action when they travel to Irvine, Calif., next Saturday.
