Lower Positions Carry Ducks Over Huskies, 5-2

SEATTLE, Wash. ? Strong play from the Ducks' four, five and six positions propelled the Ducks to a 5-2 victory over the Huskies in a non-conference dual match held Friday in Seattle.

No. 26 Dominika Dieskova continued her strong play at the one position, winning 6-1, 4-6, 6-1 over Dinka Hadzic, but losses at the two position from Anna Powaska (6-7 [4-7], 1-6) and also at the three position from Carmen Seremeta (4-6, 5-7) would force the lower seeds to step up for the Ducks.

At the four position, Ana Cecilia Olivos cruised to a 6-4, 6-0 victory after a slow start against Stephanie Svanfeldt. Anna Leksinska continued her strong play in the five position, overcoming a first set loss 1-6 to win the next two games 6-0, 6-2 over Melinda Wong. Claudia Hirt also rallied from a first set loss to capture the match at the six position 4-6, 6-2, 6-2 over Monika Kolbovic.

“We started a little slow in all of our singles matches,” Coach Nils Schyllander said. “It was good to see the lower position players carry us over a very balanced Washington team.”

Both teams appeared evenly matched during the doubles matches, as Oregon's top position team of Dieskova and Olivos would be pushed to a tiebreak by the Husky pair of Dinka Hadzic and Victoria Brymer. Dieskova and Olivos played flawlessly in the tiebreak, sweeping it 7-0 and winning the match 8-7 (7-0).

In other doubles action, Leksinska and Hirt would defeat Simpson and Kolbovic 8-5 and Powaska and Seremeta would also win their match 8-5 over Svanfeldt and Wong. The Ducks would capture the doubles point.
