EUGENE, Ore. ? The University of Oregon Volleyball team started strong, but No. 3 Stanford withstood the test and defeated the Ducks in three games, 30-28, 30-15 and 30-23.
The Ducks (10-5, 0-4 Pac-10) out-hit the defending NCAA champion Cardinal (15-1, 4-0 Pac-10) in Game 1, led by freshman Mira Djuric's ten kills and .769 attack percentage. UO hit .373 in the frame, while Stanford converted a solid .370. The difference in the game proved to be four service errors by Oregon, compared to just one for Stanford.
“If we play like we did in the last two games against Cal (on Thursday) and first game tonight, we're frightening,” said first-year head coach Jim Moore. “We can be very, very scary, and we have to play that way to be successful.”
Djuric had a match high 20.5 points and led Oregon with 18 kills. Stanford was paced by junior Kristen Richards' 19 kills and 16 from freshman Foluke Akinradewo. Richards hit .529 and Akinradewo .444, as the Cardinal struck at a .357 clip as a squad.
The Ducks hit .179 for the match, a respectable mark considering Stanford has kept six opponents under .100 this season.
Senior Kelly Russell had 11 kills and nine digs, and freshman Katie Swoboda led Oregon with 13 digs.
Next up for the Ducks is a trip to Southern California, where they will face No. 17 UCLA on Friday, Oct. 7, followed by No. 19 USC on Saturday.
