Lacrosse Finishes Fifth at Conference Tourney, Defeats Saint Mary's 16-12

MORAGA, Calif. ? The University of Oregon women's lacrosse team (6-11, 1-4) closed out its 2005 inaugural campaign with a fifth place finish at the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Conference tournament Friday. The Ducks defeated Saint Mary's 16-12, giving them three victories over the Gaels this season. Balance once again was the key with six UO players scoring two or more goals, including three-goal efforts by both Jana Bradley and Kate Fleming.
Oregon jumped out to a 6-2 lead after 10 minutes of play on the strength of four goals combined by Fleming and Bradley. SMC fought back with a run of its own, closing out the half with a 4-2 spurt and cutting Oregon's lead to 8-6.
"I though we had a consistent effort from the entire team today," Oregon head coach Jen Larsen said. "We came with a balanced attack and despite some errors really worked hard for the win. It is always nice to end the season on a winning note."
The Ducks began the second half quickly, notching five unanswered goals and pushing their lead to 13-6. The Gaels, however, crept back into the game after a 5-1 run. The Ducks didn't allow SMC's momentum to slow them down as Jen May and Jenny Browne each netted goals in the closing minutes to seal the victory.
May finishes the season with a team-high 41 goals. Bradley (30 goals) and Fleming (24) finish second and third respectively. May and Bradley were also recently named to the All-MPSF team, with May taking home Newcomer of the year honors.
The Ducks finish the season having won four of their last six.
