Women's Tennis Marches On, Marshall Steps Up
05/13/05 | Women's Tennis
The University of Oregon women's tennis team moved onto the second round of the NCAA Regionals with a confident 4-2 victory over Fresno State Friday afternoon. No. 29 Oregon (17-7) won two of three doubles matches and then clinched the match on the strength of sophomore Dominika Dieskova's straight set victory over Fresno State's Lucia Tallo. Junior Jamie Marshall provided the Ducks with both a doubles and singles victory. UO will advance to a second round matchup vs. No. 1-ranked Stanford, Saturday, at noon.
"I am happy with the way we performed today," Oregon head coach Nils Schyllander said. "Winning the doubles point gave us a lot of momentum heading into singles play. We've had a lot of players step up for us this year and today it was Jamie Marshall. She played outstanding tennis. Daria (Panova) and Dominika (Dieskova) were extremely focused and showed up to play like they have been their entire careers."
In doubles, Anna Leksinska and Jamie Marshall got the Ducks on the board with an 8-4 win over Lucia Tallo and Jacqui Haskett. Fresno then fired back after No. 41 Courtney Jantz and Lucia Sainz defeated No. 54 Daria Panova and Dieskova, 8-4. Oregon's all-time single-season and career doubles leaders Davina Mendiburu and Ester Bak then clinched the point for the Ducks, defeating the Bulldogs' Katharia Winterhalter and Fadzai Masiyazi, 8-6.

Marshall increased the Ducks' lead to 2-0 with a straight set victory over Jantz at No. 4, but Fresno State tied the score 2-2 with straight set wins at No. 3 and No. 5.
Panova jumped out to a 5-1 lead in the first set of her match, but suffered a slight ankle sprain that allowed FSU's Winterhalter to take a 6-5 lead. The Moscow, Russia native, however, would not be denied, rebounding back to take the first set 7-6 and the second, 6-3.
With Oregon up 3-2, but Bak trailing in the third set at No. 6, Dieskova delivered the clinching point, defeating Tallo, 6-4, 6-4. The win gave Dieskova a career-high 22 victories.
In NCAA postseason play, once a team reaches four points, all active matches are called. Bak was trailing Masiyazi, 6-3, 3-6, 5-4, when the match concluded.
Entering today's contest, Fresno State had won eight consecutive matches.
Oregon's 17 wins equals last season's output and marks the fifth time a UO squad has reached the 17-win plateau in the 32-year history of the program. The Ducks are 4-5 lifetime in the postseason.
Up the next, the Ducks will face two-time defending national champs, No. 1 Stanford, tomorrow at noon, at Stanford, Calif. The Cardinal defeated Army 4-0 earlier today to advance and have won now 51 consecutive matches. Earlier this season in Pac-10 play, Stanford defeated the Ducks 6-1.
