Upset Bid Falls Short for No. 22 Women's Tennis
04/01/05 | Women's Tennis
EUGENE ? With upset on their minds, the No. 22 University of Oregon women's tennis team came up a tad short Friday, falling to No. 4 USC (15-1, 5-0), 5-2. The Ducks (13-5, 2-4) won the doubles point and the first set of four singles matches, but USC made a late rally and won three, three-set matches to pick up the win.
"After winning the doubles point, I really felt we had a chance to come away with a win," Oregon head coach Nils Schyllander said. "Our team battled extremely hard, but USC is ranked No. 4 for a reason. Despite the loss, we are still playing at a high level. Tomorrow we need to come out with same intensity."
Clinching the doubles point for the 16th time this season, the Ducks stormed out to a 1-0 lead with wins at No. 1 and No. 2. No. 43 Daria Panova and Dominika Dieskova got past USC's Diane Matias and Nicole Leimbach, improving to 13-4 in dual play. Seniors Ester Bak and Davina Mendiburu also improved to 13-4 with a win over Anca Anastasiu and Taylynn Snyder.
In singles, the Women of Troy got two quick wins at No. 4 and No. 5, before Bak made the score 2-2 with a 6-1, 6-3 win over Snyder.
At the No. 1, No. 2 and No. 3 positions, Oregon won the first set, but failed to come away with any points. No. 11-ranked Leimbach defeated Panova 2-6, 6-2, 6-2, while No. 10 Lindsey Nelson took care of Dieskova, 2-6, 6-1, 6-2.
USC is now 10-0 lifetime against the Ducks.
Oregon has faced five consecutive teams in the top-25 and will close out its home schedule tomorrow (Sat.) against No. 13 UCLA at the Student Tennis Center at noon.
