04/02/05 | Women's Tennis
EUGENE ? After losing the doubles point, the No. 22 University of Oregon women's (13-6, 2-5) tennis team made courageous comeback on No. 13 UCLA, but came up the losing end to the Bruins, 5-2. Senior Daria Panova played her final home match as a Duck, crushing No. 32 Daniella Bercek, 6-1, 6-1.
"We have played six tough matches in a row and I am really pleased with our progress," Oregon head coach Nils Schyllander said. "Just like yesterday's match against USC, we were in position to swing today's match in our favor, but came up a bit short. We need to continue plugging away and focus on next weekend's non-conference matches. If we take care of business, we will be in a good position for the postseason."
In doubles, UCLA swept al three positions. No. 3-ranked Riza Zalameda and Bercek defeated No. 43 Dominika Dieskova and Panova in a close match, 8-6.
In singles, Panova defeated her second ranked player in as many weeks, cruising past No. 32 Bercek in straight sets.
Oregon's second singles win came by way of Jamie Marshall, who rebounded from yesterday's 6-0, 6-0 loss to USC, to defeat UCLA's Sarah Gregg, 7-5, 6-4.
The Ducks have faced six consecutive teams in the top-25, going 2-4 in that span, with wins over BYU and Washington.
Oregon will take a break from Pac-10 play and travel to California to take on Long Beach State (Fri., 2 p.m.), San Diego (Sun., noon) and Pepperdine (Mon., 1:30 p.m.) next weekend. Oregon defeated all three teams last year by a score of 4-3.
