Ducks Climb to 11th at Prestige
10/18/05 | Men's Golf
LA QUINTA, Calif. -- The Oregon men's golf team recovered from a poor second round -- not to mention thunder and lightning and an earthquake -- to climb up to a tie for 11th after the final round of The Prestige, played Tuesday at the par-72, 7,156-yard Greg Norman Course at PGA West.
The Ducks shot a 306 in completing Monday's second round that was suspended due to darkness and poor weather which dropped them to 14th, but then bounced back with a 293 in the final round to move up the standings.
Justin St. Clair led the Ducks with steady rounds of 72-74 and finished tied for 23rd at 5-over 221. It was the second straight top 25 finish for the senior from Springfield, Ore., and ninth of his career.
"We had thunder and lightning and a little earthquake last night so it made for an interesting day of golf," said Oregon coach Steve Nosler. "But we came back with a decent final round and that's a positive that we can take into the off season. St. Clair was pretty solid for us again, but everyone else was up-and-down."
Also for Oregon, sophomore Derek Sipe tied for 40th at 225 and sophomore Joey Benedetti tied for 44th at 226.
UCLA won the team title at 4-under 860. Brigham Young was next at 870, followed by UC Irvine (872), Illinois (875) and Pepperdine and Notre Dame tied for fifth at 880. Texas and Stanford tied for seventh at 886, Northern Colorado was ninth at 890, Colorado was 10th at 892 and Oregon and Ohio State were tied for 11th at 897, one shot ahead of UC Davis (898) and eight better than California (905).
UC Irvine's Tim Cha and Danny Zimmerman of Illinois shared the individual title at 3-under 213.
It was the final tournament of the fall for every Duck golfer but Gregg LaVoie, who tied for 59th at 229 at The Prestige, but carded a team low 71 in the final round. The senior from Pasco, Wash., has been invited to play in the Western Refining College All-America Golf Classic in El Paso, Texas, next month. Only returning All-Americans from the previous season are invited to the tournament, and LaVoie will be Oregon's first participant in the event since 1992.
