Ducks Drop Civil War Battle to Beavers

EUGENE, Ore. - The University of Oregon volleyball team (8-3,0-1) fell to the Oregon State Beavers (7-3, 1-0), 3-1, in front of a crowd of 1,902 fans at McArthur Court -- the fifth largest volleyball crowd in McArthur Court history.
Statistically, the game was even throughout, but Oregon State slightly outhit Oregon, .307 to .284. Both the Ducks and Beavers posted 71 kills apiece and the Beavers claimed a small edge in digs, 60 to 58.
In game two, the Ducks were dealt a huge blow when senior outside hitter Lauren Westendorf injured her right knee and was forced to sit out the remaineder of the match. Westendorf will be evaluated tomorrow to determine if she will undergo an MRI. Westendorf finished with 11 kills and six digs.
"Any time you lose a key player like Lauren, the complexion of the game changes," said Oregon head Coach Carl Ferreira. "I was extremely impressed with Katie O'Neil, Erin Little and Sarah Mason leading this team and giving us a chance to win."
After dropping games one and two, the Ducks battled back to defeat the Beavers 30-26 in game three to force a fourth game. Oregon dominated the third game, hitting .385 and limiting the Beavers to a match-low .188. In the final game, Oregon State's Abby Windell ended Oregon's comeback hopes with a service ace that clinched the 30-21 victory and the match.
The Ducks were led by sophomore outside hitter Sarah Mason's 19 kills on only 35 attempts (.486). Sophomore setter Heather Madison posted a team-high 57 assists, while senior libero Katie O'Neil led the Ducks' defense with 19 digs.
Oregon remains the all-time series leader, 54-37-1.
Oregon continues Pacific-10 Conference play next weekend when they travel to play Washington, Fri., Oct. 1 at 7 p.m. and Washington State, Sat., Oct. 2 at 7 p.m.
