Ducks Use 10-Stroke Improvement to Climb to 18th at NCAA Fall Preview
09/21/04 | Women's Golf
SUNRIVER, Ore. -- After shooting an opening round 308 on Monday and sitting in last place at the NCAA Fall Preview, the Oregon women's golf team used those hard-learned lessons to shave 10 strokes off its score and climb up the leaderboard to 18th place following Tuesday's second round at the 6,312-yard, par-71 Meadows Course.
The Ducks received brilliant individual play from senior Johnna Nealy, who shot a 2-over 73 on Tuesday and stood tied for 30th overall at 6-over 148. Nealy, a Grants Pass, Ore., native, once again struggled on the front nine with four bogeys and one birdie, but was flawless on the back side with eight pars to go along with a birdie on the par-4 12th.
Sophomore Kim McCready carded her second 75 in a row and was tied for 47th overall at 8-over 150. The Ducks also on Tuesday counted a 74 from freshman Victoria Wenslow and a 76 from junior Erin Andrews. Wenslow, a freshman from Bunkeflostrand, Sweden, improved nine strokes over Monday's 83 with a steady second round that included 14 pars, a birdie on the par-3 16th, a pair of bogeys and a double bogey on the par-4 seventh.
The 90 minute frost delay didn't seem to bother Washington, which shot an 8-over 292 to tie Duke for the lead at 577. The Blue Devils fired a 10-over 294 Tuesday.
Arizona State had the low round of the day, a 3-over 287, to climb to third at 579. Oklahoma State and Georgia were tied for fifth at 580. UCLA led the next group in sixth at 585, followed by New Mexico (588), California (590), Auburn (591) and Tennessee (592).
Oregon's 298 was one of the better rounds of the day as the Ducks closed in on Oregon State (604), USC (605) and South Carolina (605) with a 606 total. Oregon passed Vanderbilt (609), Texas A&M (610) and Washington State (614) during Tuesday's round.
Individually, Louise Stahle of Arizona State and Karin Sjodin of Oklahoma State were tied for the lead at 8-under 134. Sjodin fired her second straight 67 to get to 8-under, while Stahle had a 66 -- the lowest round of the day -- to claim a share of the lead. First round leader Brittany Lang of Duke was four strokes back in third at 138 following a 74 Tuesday.
The final round is scheduled to get underway Wednesday at 8 a.m.
