Ducks Finish 2-2 at Sacramento Invitational

SACRAMENTO, Calif. - The University of Oregon volleyball team (8-2) finished the Sacramento Invitational 2-2, defeating Seton Hall, 29-31, 30-28, 30-21, 30-15, then losing to host Sacramento State, 30-25, 30-20, 30-13.
In game one, two Oregon records were broken in the victory. Senior outside hitter Lauren Westendorf crushed the Duck record for single-game service aces with 12. The previous record was held by Amy McNeel, who recorded eight against George Washington in 1995. The Ducks as a team posted 22 service aces, good for first all-time, ahead of Oregon's 1988 and 1998 teams, who both recorded 18 service aces respectively.
Other notable performances include outside hitter Kelly Russell's 20-kill, 10-dig performance and sophomore setter Heather Madison, who provided the team with her fourth 50-plus assist output on the season.
In game two, the Ducks failed to grab any momentum, inching close at times only to see the Hornets deliver when it counted. Oregon came into the match outhitting its opponents .230 to .165, but saw Sacramento State hit a healthy .360 to Oregon's .102.
"We gave Sacramento State too many points," Oregon head coach Carl Ferreira said. "They play a high percentage-style of volleyball that is tough to rally from."
Oregon placed two players on the all-tourney team with Mason and Westendorf taking home honors.
Sacramento State won the team crown, finishing a perfect 4-0 in tournament play.
Oregon opens Pacific-10 Conference play Fri., Sept. 24, when it plays host to in-state rival Oregon State, 7 p.m., at McArthur Court.
