Volleyball Sweeps Southern Oregon

EUGENE, Ore. - The University of Oregon volleyball team (1-0) started the 2004 season on the right note, defeating Southern Oregon University, 30-19, 30-24, 30-22. The Ducks posted 53 kills and 50 assists to the Raiders 25 kills and 24 assists.
"I tip my cap to Southern Oregon," Oregon head coach Carl Ferreira said. "It was good to get out and play someone besides your own team. Any time you have the opportunity to play an opponent you are able to grow as a team. The next two weeks for us will serve as a springboard into Pac-10 play."
Senior outside hitter Lauren Westendorf led the Ducks with 17 kills to go along with 12 digs.
"To be able to start the season at home with a win is really amazing," Westendorf said. "The fans were really excited and that gives us confidence heading into our tournament this weekend."
Sophomore setter Heather Madison gave the Ducks a lift with 30 assists and eight digs, while senior libero Katie O'Neil posted a team-high 14 digs.
Sophomore middle blocker Kristen Bitter added four block assists with freshman Karen Waddington also adding four block assists.
Southern Oregon senior Kristen Ferris led the Red Raiders (3-2) with six kills and 13 digs.
The Ducks will host the Oregon Classic tournament this weekend, opening up with 2003 NCAA Tournament participant Colorado Friday at 7 p.m. Saturday, Oregon will take on Canada's Trinity Western and close out the tournament against 2003 NCAA Tournament participant Cal-Northridge, Saturday at 7 p.m.. The tournament is a round-robin format with each team playing each other once. Games on Friday and Saturday are at 11 a.m., 5 p.m. and 7 p.m.
