Oregon Takes Down Colorado in a Sweep
09/03/04 | Women's Volleyball
EUGENE, Ore. - The University of Oregon volleyball team (2-0) swept the Colorado Buffaloes, 30-24, 30-28, 30-25 to open the Oregon Classic Tournament. Colorado (2-1), a 2003 NCAA Tournament participant, swept the Ducks last season in Boulder, Colo., but Oregon returned the favor, posting 11 more kills and service aces than the Buffs. Oregon is now 2-2 lifetime against Colorado.
"I have a lot of respect for Colorado," Oregon head coach Carl Ferreria said. "They are well coached and coming off a tournament appearance so it was a big win for us. Our goal is to be a winning team and to make the tournament. Tonight was a step in the right direction."
The Ducks were led by senior outside hitter Lauren Westendorf who posted a match-high and career-high 20 kills. Westendorf finished the day with a .531 hitting percentage, committing just three errors on 32 attempts. Westendorf also led the Ducks with eight digs.
"That was the biggest win I've been apart of since coming to Oregon," Westendorf said. "This is a huge confidence boost for our season."
Despite 20 services errors, the Ducks played the aggressor, posting 121 attacks (.273 pct.), 14 blocks and 12 services aces.
"We handled the ball tremendously well," Ferreira said. "We put a lot of pressure on them at the service line and it led to some key points."
The Ducks also received an outstanding performance from sophomore setter Heather Madison who notched 30 assists and seven digs.
Sophomore middle blocker Kristen Bitter tallied five block assists to go along with five kills on nine attempts.
Colorado was led by outside hitter Allie Griffin who delivered 11 kills on 22 attempts.
The Ducks continue action tomorrow when they play Trinity Western at 11 a.m. and Cal-Northridge at 7 p.m. In the other two matches today, Colorado defeated Cal-Northridge in three games while Cal-Northridge defeated Trinity Western in four games.
