Volleyball Defeated by No. 6 Women of Troy

EUGENE, Ore. ? Two-time defending national champion USC maintained a balanced offensive attack to defeat the University of Oregon volleyball team, 30-19, 30-12, 30-27, in front of 709 fans at McArthur Court Friday evening. The Ducks (9-10, 1-8) fall below .500 for the first time all season.
"I was pleased with our attackers tonight," said Oregon head coach Carl Ferreira. "Offensively, I thought we had a much better performance than we did against UCLA. We wanted to play well in front of our fans and show the energy we had shown in previous matches." The Ducks were led by junior outsdie hitter Kelly Russell's eight kills, while senior libero Katie O'Neil added a match-high 18 digs. Sophomores Kristen Bitter and Allyson Leavitt contributed five kills each. Bitter, along with sophomore middle blocker Kim McNally, led the team with four block assists each and Leavitt added a career-high 11 digs. USC's All-American Bibiana Candelas and senior Keao Burdine led all players with 15 kills each. Candelas also had two solo blocks and five block assists in the match. In game one, Oregon pulled within a point, 10-11, after a kill by freshman middle blocker Karen Waddington, but two kills by All-American Emily Adams and a service ace by Burdine sparked a 12-4 USC run and it led 23-14 late in the game. Leavitt stalled the rally with a kill, but the Ducks scored just five more points in the game and USC won 30-19 after an attack error by Russell. The Women of Troy had their best showing in game two, hitting .406 (15 kills, 32 attempts) while holding Oregon's offense to a -.103 hitting percentage. The Ducks kept it close in game three, pulling within two points, 20-22 after a kill by Russell, but USC edged the Ducks, 8-7, in the final stretch and finished the match with a kill by Adams. The Ducks continue Pac-10 play next week at McArthur Court against Washington State (Thu., Oct. 28, 7 p.m.) and No. 1 Washington (Fri., Oct. 29, 7 p.m.). The Ducks split their road trip to the Evergreen State earlier in the year, losing to the Huskies, 3-0, and sweeping the Cougs', 3-0.
