
Ducks Fall to Cougs, O'Neil Shines

EUGENE, Ore. - The University of Oregon volleyball team was defeated by Washington State in the Ducks' first five-game match of the season, 26-30, 30-28, 25-30, 30-25, 15-6.
Despite the loss, senior libero Katie O'Neil posted the third highest dig performance in Pacific-10 conference history with 43. O'Neil's previous career-high was 27.
Oregon (9-11, 1-9) got off to a quick start, hitting .328 percent with 23 kills in the game one victory. Game two was even throughout with Washington State inching out a 30-28 win. Game three belonged to Oregon, as the Ducks held WSU to a .019 hitting pct. Games four and five, however, saw the Cougs prevail, forcing 19 Duck errors combined. Oregon's hitting percentage declined each of the five games.
Oregon received outstanding performances from junior Kelly Russell and sophomore Allyson Leavitt. Both players set career-bests for kills and digs. Russell notched 25 kills and 24 digs, while Springfield, Ore. native, and Thurston High School alum, Leavitt, tallied 24 kills and 26 digs. Both players combined for 49 of Oregon's season-best 78 kills.
Sophomore setter Heather Madison also notched a career-best, posting 59 assists.
Washington State (4-19, 1-9) was led by outside hitter and Springfield High School alum, Kelly Rosin, who led the Cougars with 16 kills.
The Ducks stay at home tomorrow (Fri.) when they play host to No. 1 Washington at 7 p.m. at McArthur Court.
