LOS ANGELES, Calif. ? Oregon sophomore Jaclyn Jones and freshman Sarah Mason had 16 and 12 kills, respectively to lead the Duck offense, but it wasn't enough to fend off the eighth-ranked UCLA Bruins, who defeated the Ducks 30-20, 30-21, 36-34 in front of 688 fans at Pauley Pavilion in Los Angeles, Calif., Friday evening. The Bruins improved to 10-2 overall, 2-1 Pacific-10 Conference and Oregon fell to 3-9, 0-3.
"I'm extremely optimistic for this team, but at the same time I'm disapponted because we had game three," Oregon head coach Carl Ferreira said. "Winning gives them such reinforcement, but what they've walked away with tonight is knowing what they can accomplish. In the third game we wanted UCLA and the fans to wonder why Oregon kept fighting and didn't give up. We were extremely resilient."
For the fifth consecutive match, Mason (Hilo, Hawaii) had 10 or more kills and for the second-consecutive match Jones led the Ducks in kills and points. Sophomore middle blocker Kelly Russell added 10 kills ? her seventh 10-kill match this season and third straight while libero Katie O'Neil led the way defensively with a match-high 16 digs. Mason also had a team-high three blocks with setter Jodi Bell, middle blocker Kristen Bitter and Russell adding two each.
UCLA was led by Brynn Murphy and Heather Cullen, who had 15 kills each. Chrissie Zartman had 16 digs to lead the Bruin defense, who held the edge in digs 55-48. The Bruins also held the advantage in kills (58-47) with the exception of game three when the Ducks had 23 kills to UCLA's 20. Both teams finished with five blocks and UCLA hit .274 to Oregon's .197.
