CORVALLIS ? The University of Oregon volleyball team fell 30-26, 30-27, 30-28 in front of 1,274 fans at Gill Coliseum in its Civil War match with Oregon State in Corvallis Thursday evening. The Beavers secured their first Pac-10 victory and improved to 11-6 overall, 1-4 Pac-10 while Oregon's record fell to 3-11, 0-5.
Oregon middle blocker Kelly Russell led the Ducks with 19 points (16 kills, three service aces, two blocks) and freshman Sarah Mason added 12 points. Russell hit .400 in the match while Mason was an impressive .308.
Oregon had nine aces in the match, including three by middle blocker Kristen Bitter, who also added a match-high six blocks. The Ducks had nine blocks to Oregon State's three. Libero Katie O'Neil led the Ducks defense with a match-high 14 digs.
Allison Lawrence led the Beavers with 23 points and Karah Rhoades added 17 points.
"We needed to have a more balanced offensive attack," Oregon head coach Carl Ferreira said. "I think we're playing at the emotional level that we want to be at, but we've got to get more mature in terms of late game situations."
Game one was tied four times before an Oregon State run put the Beavers ahead 11-7 after two kills by Rhodes. The Ducks later pulled within two points, 14-12, but were never able to take the lead. Oregon State later led by six points, 25-19, but after a kill by Russell and an ace by Lauren Westendorf, the Ducks cut the deficit to two points, 28-26, after a solo block by Bitter and a block assist by Jaclyn Jones and Bitter. But the Beavers took the first game after a kill by Abby Windell and an Oregon attack error. Mason was near flawless in the game, tallying five kills in six attempts while committing zero errors to hit .833. The Ducks also outblocked Oregon State, 4-1 in the first game.
Oregon State carried the momentum into the second game, taking an early 6-2 lead. Oregon pulled within a point, 6-5, after an ace by freshman Heather Madison, but Oregon State led throughout, taking its largest lead, 15-10. The Ducks again cut the lead to a point, 17-16, after two kills by Mason and an ace by Bitter. Another ace by Bitter as well as an attack error by Lawerence gave the Ducks their first lead, 18-17. A solo block by Mason extended Oregon's lead before the Beavers eventually tied the game at 21 on a kill by Laura Collins and took the lead with a kill by Rhoades. Oregon State outscored the Ducks 8-6 down the stretch to take a 2-0 lead in the match.
Despite trailing by two games in the match, Oregon stormed out to a 15-4 lead after an ace by Russell. The Beavers did their best to rally, pulling within seven points, 17-10, after a trio of Duck errors. Oregon State kept chipping away and pulled within one point 24-23 after a kill by Rhoades. The Beavers eventually took the lead 27-26 on another kill by Rhoades and the match was tied just one more time at 28 before Oregon State secured the win.
