Joe Schaffeld
- Induction:
- 2013
No coach was ever more respected around the state of Oregon than Joe Schaffeld, who played a significant role in three of his alma mater’s New Year’s Day bowl appearances as a player and longtime coach. The Vale native spent his entire coaching career in the state as a high school and small college mentor before beginning a 24-year tenure as the Ducks’ linebackers coach in 1974. Schaffeld turned his attention to the defensive line for his last 20 years on the staff, including three years as defensive coordinator from 1983 through ’85. A lineman on Oregon’s 1958 Rose Bowl team that fell three-points shy to a heavily-favored Ohio State squad, his coaching tenure spanned that of three Oregon head coaches and culminated in eight first-team all-conference selections and no fewer than 12 former pupils who played professionally. Schaffeld played key coaching roles in the Ducks advancing to six post-season appearances, including the Rose and Cotton bowls following the 1994 and ’95 seasons, respectively, before stepping down as the longest-tenured football coach in school history. One of the university’s most passionate ambassadors, he remained active among the athletic department’s interests with the Duck Athletic Fund for more than 20 years after his retirement from the coaching ranks.
