Ducks Open Season With Sixth-Place Finish

RANCHO SANTA FE, Calif. — The Oregon men's golf team opened its season with a sixth-place finish at the Vuori Invitational following Tuesday's final round.
Arkansas won the tournament at even par, finishing one stroke ahead of a surging Colorado team that shot 3 under in the final round. USC, BYU and San Diego rounded out the top five.
Oregon entered the final round in contention after posting rounds of 285 and 291 for an 8-over total. The Ducks combined to shoot 13 over in the final round, dropping three spots on the team leaderboard and finishing at 21 over.
Sophomore Sebastian Desoisa opened the season with a top-10 finish, placing fourth at 1 under for the tournament. He finished four strokes behind individual champion Brayden Forte of San Diego State, who won at 5 under. Desoisa made 13 birdies throughout the tournament, tying Forte for the most in the field.
Jeffrey Kwak delivered Oregon's best score Tuesday with an even-par 71, finishing the tournament at 16 over. The senior responded well after opening with a 13-over 84, improving by 10 strokes with a 3-over 74 in the second round before closing at even par.
Ramil Saelim tied for 28th after shooting a 4-over 75 in the final round. The junior posted rounds of 72, 73 and 75 to finish at 7 over.
Tim Chang matched his second-round score with another 6-over 77 on Tuesday after opening the tournament with an even-par 71. The junior finished tied for 49th at 12 over.
Carl-Hugo Eriksson completed his collegiate debut at 13 over, recording rounds of 75, 73 and 78.
How It Happened
Desoisa endured a difficult start to the final round, playing his first four holes at 5 over. The sophomore responded with three consecutive birdies on the 15th, 16th and 17th holes before making the turn at 3 over. He closed with nine consecutive pars to card a 3-over 74 and secure fourth place at 1 under overall, his best finish since winning the Cal Poly Invitational last fall.
Kwak made the turn at even par after recording birdies on the 10th and 14th holes to offset bogeys on the 13th and 15th. A double bogey on the first moved him to 2 over, but the senior responded with birdies on the second and seventh to finish with an even-par 71, Oregon's best round of the day.
Saelim made the turn at even par after offsetting a bogey on the 12th with a birdie on the 11th. The junior encountered trouble over his closing nine, recording four bogeys to finish with a 4-over 75. Saelim ended the tournament tied for 28th at 7 over.
Chang rounded out the Ducks' counting scores Tuesday. He made his lone birdie of the final round on the 15th hole but made five bogeys over his opening nine to reach the turn at 4 over. The junior added two bogeys over his final nine to card a 6-over 77, matching his second-round score. Chang finished the tournament tied for 49th at 12 over.

Next Up
Oregon will make the short trip north to Corvallis for the Oregon State Invitational, hosted by the Beavers. The two-day tournament will feature 54 holes of competition Monday, Oct. 5, and Tuesday, Oct. 6.
