UO pushes No. 22 TTU, 4-3
LUBBOCK, Texas – Facing its first road and ranked tests of the young spring season, the Oregon women's tennis team battled to a 4-3 defeat against No. 22 Texas Tech on Sunday at McLeod Tennis Center.
It marked the second straight season in which the Ducks (3-1) pushed a top-25 Texas Tech team to a 4-3 decision. This time, trailing 2-1 in the match, Oregon needed to win the final three singles matches to complete the comeback – with all three courts going to a third and decisive set.
The Ducks pulled off two of the three three-set matches, getting clutch victories from Olivia Symons at No. 2 and Bridget Mihulka on court three, but the Red Raiders picked up the final team point to escape with the 4-3 win.
Trailing 1-0 heading to singles, Texas Tech pushed its lead to 2-0 with a straight-set victory on court one. Freshman Hinata Furutani quickly answered to get the Ducks on the board with a 6-4, 6-2 win on court five.
The Red Raiders took a tightly contested doubles point, winning at Nos. 1 and 2. TTU's 75th-ranked doubles team narrowly escaped UO's top tandem of Tilde Jagare and Symons 6-4, while the Ducks' third doubles team of freshmen Hadley Appling and Virigina Crocker led their match 5-4 when the Red Raiders clinched the point.
Furutani, Mihulka and Symons each kept their perfect spring singles record intact. Symons improved to 4-0 this season, all at the second spot in UO's lineup. Furutani, in her first collegiate spring season, as moved to 2-0 while Mihulka pushed her record to 3-0.
The Ducks finish their trip to Texas on Monday with a neutral-site matchup against Sam Houston at 9:30 a.m. PT.
