The Oregon women opened their season with a win Monday over Hawai'i fueled by 8-of-14 three-point shooting to open the game.
EUGENE, Ore. — Two hallmarks of women's basketball teams coached by Kelly Graves over the years have been prolific offense and positive energy. Not every team in his four decades of coaching has embodied those traits, but most have, and the 2026-27 Ducks look like the latest example.
Oregon's veterans got the season off to a hot start Monday, and newcomers provided the energy late as the UO women opened the season with a win. The Ducks outscored visiting Hawai'i by 18 in the first quarter and went on to win 87-54 before 3,856 fans at Matthew Knight Arena.
"It was a good win," Graves said. "That's a good program with some talent, a lot of talent, and we've got some things now we can work on. So, good start."

Transfer Mallory Heyer led four players in double figures for the Ducks, scoring 16 points in her official UO debut. Ehis Etute added 15 points with 14 rebounds, while Katie Fiso and Ari Long scored 14 each.
Freshmen played over half the available minutes in the fourth quarter, banking their first official collegiate experience — to the delight of their veteran teammates cheering them on from the bench.
"This is my 40th year of coaching, and I really love this team," Graves said. "I love their energy. They're easy to be around every day. They like each other. They work hard for each other. I think they're selfless, and they're just great teammates — they really are, and they make coaching fun."

How It Happened: Heyer scored 10 points in the opening quarter, while Fiso and Long scored seven each. The Ducks actually trailed early, 6-2, before mounting a 22-2 run capped by a pair of three-pointers from Long.
Heyer made a pair of threes early in the second and then Avary Cain added another moments later, at which point the Ducks were 8-of-14 from three-point range to start the game. That was needed production against a Hawai'i defense that featured 6-foot-5 junior Ritorya Tamilo, who blocked seven shots Monday.
"We're working on spacing the floor and getting and hitting the outside shots, and opening up the inside eventually too," Heyer said. "So, kind of just doing whatever the defense gives us."
Cain's three to cap Oregon's hot shooting start made it 38-16, and the Ducks eventually led 47-33 at halftime. It was 60-43 midway through the third, when Oregon went on an 11-0 run to close the quarter with a 28-point lead.

With that cushion in hand, Graves got some minutes for his newcomers. Brooklynn Haywood, Kennedy Holman, Emilia Krstevski and La'u Pele Falatea combined for 19 points in the game, and helped Oregon outscore Hawai'i in the fourth quarter, 16-11.
"I thought they did a great job at the end of the game, when we had all four freshmen at the same time," Heyer said. "That's just going to be good for the growth of them and the growth of our team, to get them minutes and opportunities to keep improving."
