10/09/26 | Women's Volleyball
The Ducks improve to 13-2 overall and 4-1 in Big Ten play.
EAST LANSING, Mich. — The 13th-ranked Oregon volleyball team took down No. 22 Michigan State in four sets (25-22, 25-23, 21-25, 25-20) Friday at the Breslin Events Center in East Lansing, Mich. Alanah Clemente and Sjakkie Donkers each had 17 kills while the Ducks held the Spartans' top-five offense in check to improve to 13-2 overall and 4-1 in Big Ten play.
Â
Oregon's defensive effort held Michigan State to a .147 hitting percentage, its second-lowest mark of the season. The Spartans came into the match hitting .308 this season, good for fifth nationally.
Â
Clemente hit a season-high .520 coupled with those 17 kills and added five digs and three blocks. The match was her fourth-consecutive outing with at least 15 kills while hitting .356 during that stretch. In another double-digit performance for Donkers, she also had eight digs, three assists and a solo block.
Â
Fifth-year setter Marina Crownover extended her team lead in double-doubles with her seventh—48 assists, 11 digs—against the Spartans. Valentina Vaulet had 10 kills and tied her season high with four service aces. It was her sixth match of the season with multiple aces.
Â
Freshman Alaina Pollard offered a spark off the bench with six kills on eight errorless swings and also posted a team-high four blocks. Reese Sheppard and Maila Ribeiro led Oregon's floor defense with 13 and 12 digs, respectively. Eight of Sheppard's 13 digs came in the closeout, fourth set.
Â
How It Happened: Michigan State (13-2, 3-2 B1G) won the first five points of the match and led 18-15 after a four-point surge out of the media timeout. The home team was three points away from taking the opening set at 22-20 after a kill out of the middle. However, Oregon ended the set on a 5-0 run of their own, capping the streak with a kill by Clemente.
Â
It was another strong start by the Spartans in the second, jumping out to a 7-3 advantage and leading 15-11 at the media timeout. In a reverse of the opener, Oregon went on a four-point run to pull even. Dalia Virlan had two kills during that push. With the score tied at 20-all, the Ducks made their decisive move and led 24-21 after an ace by Vaulet. The Spartans saved two set points to force a timeout from Oregon but out of the huddle, Donkers thumped a shot down the line to secure the 2-0 match lead.
Â
In a repeat of the previous sets, the home team was quick off the mark and led by as six points early in the third frame. That lead ballooned to seven—19-12—after back-to-back service aces. Despite pulling to within three down the stretch, the Ducks couldn't make up the deficit before Michigan State closed out the third with the help of an errant UO serve.
Â
The teams traded points early in the fourth but Oregon rattled off seven of nine points to take an 11-6 lead after a kill by Donkers. The Spartans got to within a point three times during the middle stages of the set but Oregon began to pull away, ultimately arriving at match point—24-18—on the fourth ace of the night from Vaulet. On the team's third chance to seal the win, Crownover dished to Pollard who put away the final tally.
Â
Notable: Four-match winning streak in Big Ten play; longest since joining the league in 2024 … Friday was the first top-25 matchup in East Lansing since 1995 … Virlan was credited with a service ace in the first set when MSU was called out of rotation; an ace in nine-consecutive matches for Virlan.
Â
Up Next: The Ducks' road trip continues Saturday at Michigan (4 p.m. PT, B1G+). Oregon's next home match is next Friday, Oct. 16, when the team hosts No. 15 Indiana.
Â
Single-match and season tickets for all Oregon home matches are currently on sale.
