Oregon volleyball will host Iowa on Sunday after sweeping Maryland at home Friday night.
EUGENE, Ore. — Oregon volleyball orchestrated a coolly efficient performance Friday at Matthew Knight Arena.
The No. 12 Ducks put together their sixth three-set sweep of the season but their first in Big Ten play, beating Maryland for their ninth win over the last 10 matches. The UO women came away with a 25-18, 25-21, 25-18 victory before 2,746 fans.
"I challenged them quite a bit in set one to say, like, hey, let's step on the gas here," UO coach Trent Kersten said. "And you know, I don't think it was our best volleyball by any means, but we came out with a three-set victory."
The Ducks (18-3, 9-2 Big Ten) responded to their coach's prompting to pull away in set one after a back-and-forth opening few minutes, and again in the second set when the Terps threatened to even the match by leading 20-19 late in the set. In each case, Kersten asked for more gas, and the Ducks floored it.
"I think it stems from building our culture and belief in each other and how we want to respond as a team," said sophomore Alanah Clemente, who led Oregon with 14 kills. "When we were starting off slow at the beginning, it was just, hey, we have each other, we have each other's backs. We need to respond right here. We got this."

Sjakkie Donkers and Valentina Vaulet each added 10 kills for the Ducks, Alaina Pollard had eight and Marina Crownover had 41 assists with six digs. Reese Sheppard had a team-high 15 digs, and Donkers added nine.
The Ducks scored six of the last seven points to win the second set, then broke open the third with a mid-set run on their way to their first sweep in conference play this fall. The significance of that milestone to Kersten?
"That we're done 20 minutes earlier," he quipped. "I don't care how we get them. It's about winning matches. Our conference is so tough. (You can't) get too picky with it."
How It Happened: Kills by Dalia Virlan and Vaulet helped Oregon out to a 4-1 lead in set one, but Maryland rallied to tie it at 5-5. The Ducks then scored seven of the next eight to break it open. Donkers had three kills during a four-point run that got Oregon out to a 22-14 lead, and the Ducks clinched the set on an error.

Oregon was up 7-5 in the second when Maryland ripped off five straight to take the lead. The Terps later used a 5-1 run to go up 15-11, and though the Ducks fought back to forge a couple of ties, Maryland led as late as 20-19. But a kill by Vaulet tied it back up, and Donkers then supplied four straight points on a block and three kills as the Ducks took the set.
The third set saw Maryland lead as late as 10-8, when a kill by Clemente, an ace from Virlan and a block by Pollard put the Ducks in front. Maryland tied it back up 11-11, but kills by Clemente, Pollard, and Vaulet put the Ducks in front for good. Four straight kills by Clemente set up match point, and the Ducks won it on their second try with a kill by Pollard that was ruled a UO point after a successful challenge by Kersten.
