The Ducks are sending more than 30 entries to the Thane Baker Invitational.
EUGENE, Ore. – The indoor season for the Oregon track and field team continues this Friday with the Thane Baker Invitational in Manhattan, Kan. The Ducks are sending more than 30 entries to the meet which will focus on the team's sprints, jumps, throws and multis groups.
The Ducks are one of eight teams competing Friday along with BYU (women), Kansas, Northern Iowa, Oklahoma State, Tulsa, Wichita State and host Kansas State. Oregon's competition schedule will begin with newcomer Tyler Burns in the pole vault at 1:45 p.m. Running events will start with prelims of the straight-away sprints at 2:05 p.m.
Aaliyah McCormick will get her senior campaign started with the 60-meter hurdles. She is the reigning Big Ten indoor champion and NCAA indoor runner-up in the event. McCormick takes a lifetime best of 7.91 into the meet, good for the No. 2 performer in UO history.
Indoor school-record holder Kobe Lawrence will take on his first shot put of the season. The Kingston, Jamaica, native carries an indoor best of 19.21m/63-0.25 and finished fourth outdoors at the national meet in Eugene. Lawrence will be joined in the field by UO teammate Ben Smith, one of two redshirts set to make their official debuts in the kit; Maleigha Canaday-Elliott (horizontal jumps) is the other.
The pole vault will feature newcomer Tyler Burns for the men and Emily Fitzsimmons on the women's side. Burns is one of three transfers set to make their Oregon debuts Friday. Burns was an NCAA indoor qualifier last season for Cal. That list also features Peyton Bair (Mississippi State) and Kai Graves-Blanks (Iowa).
Fitzsimmons enters the year as the No. 2 indoor performer in UO history with a pair of 4.36m/14-3.5 clearances last February. She went on to finish sixth at the NCAA outdoor meet with a lifetime best of 4.44m/14-6.75, good for third on the program's outdoor list.
Bair, the reigning NCAA heptathlon and decathlon champion, is one of three Ducks on The Bowerman Preseason Watch List. He is joined by fellow transfer Mykolas Alekna (Cal) and two-time Big Ten 5,000 champion Silan Ayyildiz.
The Ducks' distance crew will also have entries in invitational sections of the mile and 3,000 meters.
