Third-Place Finish Sets Up Rematch With Texas
09/16/25 | Women's Golf
LAKE BLUFF, Ill. – The final day of the 2025 Jackson T. Stephens Cup will feature a rematch from the 2025 NCAA quarterfinals as the Oregon women's golf team will face Texas in match play after finishing stroke play in third place on Tuesday at Shoreacres Golf Club.
The No. 2 Ducks and No. 3 Longhorns will square off beginning at 8:30 a.m. PT. Oregon defeated Texas in a dramatic match to reach the NCAA semifinals for the second year in a row, with Tong An providing the winning moment on a second playoff hole to seal the victory.
Now a sophomore, An was the top performer for the Ducks on Tuesday with a 3-under 67. Oregon posted a 5-over 285 in the final round to finish third in the elite six-team field, coming in four strokes back of No. 1 Stanford for second place and nine behind No. 11 Wake Forst for first. The Cardinal will face the Demon Deacons in the championship match on Wednesday.
Kiara Romero earned her second top-five finish in as many tournaments to kick off her junior season, tying for second overall at 4-under par following an even-par 70 in the final round.
How it Happened: The Ducks entered the final round in a three-way tie for the team lead with Wake Forest and Stanford. Oregon got off to a good start and had a two-stroke lead on the field midway through the final round, but a stretch of six bogeys and just two birdies through the first five holes of the back nine allowed the Demon Deacons and the Cardinal to surge ahead.
Romero came into Tuesday's action just one stroke back of individual leader Macy Pate (Wake Forest), who would go on to win medalist honors at 8 under. Romero was 1 under through five holes before running into trouble with three bogeys in four holes going into the turn. She bounced back with a 2-under 34 on the back nine, including two birdies in her last four holes to finish in a tie as the runner up.
An impressed with by far her best round of the week, making three birdies and 15 pars for a bogey-free 67. It was the fourth career sub-70 round and first of the season for An, who moved up 10 spots to tie for 22nd.
Sophomore Suvichaya Vinijchaitham joined Romero in the top 10 in eighth place overall, finishing at 2 over after a 3-over 73 on Tuesday. Vinijchaitham was 2 under at the turn but carded six bogeys on the back nine, including four straight after making the turn.
Freshman Sophie Han rounded out the counting scores with a 5-over 75 and earned her first career top-20 finish in a tie for 17th at 8 over.
Ducks on the Leaderboard:
3. Oregon — 275-287-285 — 847 (+7)
T2. Kiara Romero — 67-69-70 — 206 (-4)
8. Suvichaya Vinijchaitham — 70-69-73 — 212 (+2)
T17. Sophie Han — 69-74-75 — 218 (+8)
T22. Tong An — 79-75-67 — 221 (+11)
29. Shyla Singh — 69-76-80 — 225 (+15)
What it Means: The Ducks were hoping to reach Wednesday's championship match, but will still get valuable match-play experience against a top-five opponent. Romero, Vinijchaitham and An were all on the team that faced Texas in the national quarterfinals last spring, but Han and Singh will get their first taste of collegiate match play that could prove to be valuable when the postseason comes around.
Notable: Romero earned her fifth career runner-up finish, 12th top-five finish 17th top-10 finish and 22nd top-20 finish in her 23rd career tournament ... Romero has now shot par-or-better in 55 of 59 career rounds, including five of six to open her junior season ... Oregon led the field with 50 total birdies ... Han led the field in par-5 scoring (4.17) and tied for second in birdies (13).
