Selection Sunday Awaits After Quarterfinal Loss

Oregon softball suffered a 5-0 defeat to Michigan in the Big Ten Tournament on Thursday.
WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. — The No. 4 Oregon softball team lost in the quarterfinals of the Big Ten Tournament on Thursday, 5-0 to Michigan at Purdue's Bittinger Stadium.
The Ducks (47-7) entered the tournament as the top seed after claiming the conference regular-season title. They now await their NCAA championships destination when the field is announced Sunday.
"We're not done; there's so much more to do," UO coach Melyssa Lombardi said. "But in order for that to happen, we've got to be better than what we showed today. Michigan played really, really well on all sides of the ball. We didn't play well enough. And that's the difference."
Oregon had opportunities offensively but went 1-for-15 with runners on base, including 0-for-7 with runners in scoring position. Michigan, meanwhile, was 7-for-12 with runners in scoring position.

How It Happened: After a 1-2-3 top of the first in the circle for UO starter Elise Sokolsky (15-3), Kai Luschar singled to lead off for Oregon and stole second — tying the UO record of 102 career stolen bases.
But the next three hitters were retired in order, and Michigan took a 1-0 lead in the second on a two-out RBI double. Three straight hits to open the top of the third put the Wolverines up 2-0, though Lyndsey Grein came on and got out of the inning while leaving the bases loaded.
The Ducks got two on with one out in the bottom of the third but stranded both runners. They suffered from some hard luck in the fourth — after a leadoff single by Emma Cox, Stefini Ma'ake lined a ball right to the first baseman, who doubled off the runner, and Dezianna Patmon followed with a long fly hauled in just in front of the wall.

"It's tough — we had some balls we hit hard that were right at people, some things that didn't go our way," Lombardi said. "But we just needed more than that. We needed more than that."
A walk followed by three straight one-out singles made it 3-0 in the fifth and brought Staci Chambers out of the UO bullpen. A sacrifice fly and another RBI single made it 5-0 entering the middle of the fifth.
Kaylynn Jones singled to lead off the bottom of the inning, and a one-out single by Luschar put two on. Both were stranded, and the Ducks managed just one more baserunner the rest of the way.
Notable: The Ducks were shut out for just the second time this season. … Luschar tied the program career record for stolen bases held by Janie Takeda Reed. … Chambers made her longest appearance this season since Feb. 8.
Up Next: The Ducks await their NCAA Regional destination on Selection Sunday (4 p.m., ESPN2).
