Regional Opener a Run-Rule Victory

Oregon beat Weber State in five innings Friday, 8-0, and advanced to face Stanford at Jane Sanders Stadium on Saturday at 1 p.m.
EUGENE, Ore. — Oregon's NCAA Regional opener Friday got underway a little later than scheduled after the previous game went long. The Ducks made up for lost time once they took the field.
The No. 6 Ducks opened regional play for the second year in a row with an 8-0 victory in five innings, this time over Weber State before 2,113 fans at Jane Sanders Stadium. Oregon advanced to face Friday's other winner in the Eugene Regional, Stanford, on Saturday at 1 p.m.
First pitch for the UO women Friday was nearly an hour later than originally scheduled, after Binghamton pushed the Cardinal to a full seven innings. The delay didn't impact Oregon's start, as the Ducks got dominance in the circle from Lyndsey Grein, a first-inning homer from freshman phenom Rylee McCoy and late insurance to end the game in five innings.
"We've been talking all year about starting — the ability to start fast, stay fast, finish fast," UO coach Melyssa Lombardi said. "I love how Lyndsey set the tone, how our defense set the tone. It took us a little bit offensively to get going — we were just timing-wise a little early and putting a lot of balls on the ground — but what I love is the in-game adjustment that they made. They got on time, and once they started to get on time they started lifting the ball, driving the ball and passing the bat from there."

Dezianna Patmon had a two-run homer in the fourth and an RBI double in the fifth as Oregon pulled away. Kai Luschar walked it off with an RBI single to end the game in the fifth, after earlier stealing her UO-record 103rd career base.
Grein (27-2) had allowed at least three earned runs in each of her previous four outings, but she allowed only three hits and a walk over five innings Friday. She struck out nine to reach 203 on the season.
"Every day is a new day and a new opportunity to get better, and I think that's how I approached today," Grein said. "We had a hard, tough week of practice, and coach prepared us. We've been ready all season for postseason, but especially this week, we were fully prepared to step on the field and dominate."

How It Happened: Grein pitched around a one-out single in the top of the first. McCoy, Oregon's freshman home run record-holder, came up with two out in the bottom of the inning and lined the first pitch she saw to center field for her 18th homer of the season.
"I wanted to start fast for my team, like coach said," McCoy said. "Lyndsey started really fast, and I wanted to have that same thing for the offense, and pass the bat."
Grein struck out the side in the second, and got two more strikeouts in the third. In the bottom of the third, Luschar walked with two out and stole second, breaking the UO career record she had shared with Janie (Takeda) Reed.
She was stranded to end the inning, but the Ducks exploded from there. After a 1-2-3 top of the fourth for Grein, McCoy walked to lead off the bottom of the fourth, Kedre Luschar followed with a single and Stefini Ma'ake drove a one-out double into right-center field to plate both runners.

Patmon then followed with her ninth homer of the season, making it 5-0.
"It was awesome," she said. "Every day is just another day for us to be able to play together, and so just knowing that your teammates are there behind you, it takes a lot of stress and a lot of pressure off you, to just go out there and play free."
Grein ran into trouble in the top of the fifth, allowing a one-out double followed by a walk. But she struck out the next two batters to end the threat.
"I looked around at my team and I was like, no way am I going to allow that to happen again," Grein said of giving up the double, "especially having a walk come up after that. Like, no way. My teammates scored me some runs; there's no way I'm gonna give that up. So I think that really lit a fire under my butt and got me rolling."

Needing three runs to end the game in walk-off fashion in the bottom of the fifth, the Ducks got them. Kedre Luschar doubled and Emma Cox singled to open the inning and put runners at the corners; pinch runner Presley Lawton then broke from first and forced a throw down to second, allowing Luschar to steal home for a 6-0 lead.
Patmon came up with one out and doubled in Lawton. A groundball out moved Patmon to third with two out, pinch-hitter Braiesey Rosa walked and Kai Luschar beat out a single to shortstop, driving in Patmon with the game-winning run.
Notable: The Ducks won their NCAA Regional opener for the fourth straight season. … Oregon improved to 22-0 in regional play at home, and won a postseason game at Jane Sanders Stadium for the first time since a Super Regional victory over Kentucky in 2018. … Luschar's 55 stolen bases on the season are four shy of the Big Ten record. … Lombardi's next victory will be No. 233 in her UO career, tied for second in program history. … McCoy's next home run will tie the UO single-season record of 19 set by Ann Marie Topps in 2007. … Oregon's 48 wins on the season are tied for seventh-most in program history with the 2016 team. The 2014 team holds the record with 56.

Head coach Melyssa Lombardi on the value of being at home this week
"It's been a long season for us. We've been on the road a lot; we've been on the East Coast a lot. To be able to come home and have three normal days of practice, and for these guys to go to school and just to get on their typical routine, it was really nice for us. We felt very recovered, prepared and excited to take on the weekend."
