Ducks Will Look For Series Win On Sunday

EUGENE, Ore. — No. 9 Oregon struggled both at the plate and on the mound on Saturday dropping an 8-0 decision to Rutgers in Big Ten Conference play at PK Park.
How It Happened: Rutgers took an early lead scoring three in the top of the third on a Ty Doucette three-run homer. The Scarlet Knights (10-13, 2-3 Big Ten) added a run in the sixth and four more in the eighth.
Mason Neville led off the bottom of the first with a base hit before being picked off. After that, Rutgers starting pitcher Mack Landen proceeded to retire the next 18 Ducks' batters before Chase Meggers doubled in the bottom of the seventh to give UO (18-5, 6-2 Big Ten) its second hit.
Box Score Notes: Oregon was shut out for the first time since losing 2-0 at Oregon State on April 26, 2024, and the first time at home since losing to UCLA 16-0 on March 12, 2023 … Starting Oregon pitcher Collin Clarke struck out seven hitters, including four in the second inning … Drew Smith returned to the field as a pinch hitter in the eighth inning after missing the previous 16 games because of injury.
On Deck: Oregon will look to clinch the series on Sunday with a 12:05 p.m. first pitch at PK Park.
Quotes:
Head Coach Mark Wasikowski
On message to the team…
"I mean, the game was pretty obvious, they dominated the game, right. Their starting pitcher was elite. You know, 92 to 95 or 96 with command of three pitches, he was excellent. Tremendous freshman arm. You know, and to get, basically, seven of the eight RBI, with two outs? Tremendous job of two out hitting, credit to that team. They showed up ready to play, and they really executed well."
On building more consistency at the plate…
"Yeah, there were a lot of balls hit hard. I think we had 10 well hit balls that just didn't find any grass. Or, you know, we had three balls robbed from probably being home runs. It was clear that the ball wasn't bouncing our way today, and it was clear case that Rutgers did a tremendous job of creating their own breaks with two out hitting."
On Rutgers starter…
"He pitched really well, there's no secret. When you're pounding the strike zone with multiple pitches for strikes and doing what he did with his stuff, you're going to have success. And he was on the corners when he needed to be, and out of the zone when he needed to be. And he has an elite arm."
