EUGENE, Ore. – Freshman base Angelica Martin has been named the NCATA Freshman of the Week after helping lead Oregon to a win over No. 3 Gannon last week, the organization announced Wednesday.
The specialty base played a vital role in the Ducks' 276.565-263.465 win over the Golden Knights, competing in five of six events. She helped Oregon outscore Gannon in the acro and toss events as well as the team event as the Ducks earned their first ranked win of the season.
Martin once again shined in the five-element acro alongside fellow freshman Cassidy Cu, scoring a 9.75 in the skill that the pair submitted to the NCATA. The duo has scored 9.65-plus in the heat in every meet this season. She also helped the Ducks earn a 9.65 in the 450 Salto toss as UO scored a 29.00 in the event for the second time this season.
This marks the first career honor for the Wilmington, Del., native after earning honorable mention recognition following each of Oregon's first two meets. She is the second Duck to claim weekly awards this season after Blessyn McMorris earned Athlete of the Week honors following UO's season opener against Morgan State.
Freshman Briya Alvarado also earned NCATA recognition for the first time in her career as she earned honorable mention specialist of the week honors. Alvarado helped the Ducks earn their highest tumbling total since 2017 last week, scoring season highs in both the aerial pass (9.850) and trio pass (9.600) alongside Haley Ellis and Alexis Giardina.
The Ducks return to action on Friday at 6 p.m. when they host No. 5 Mary Hardin-Baylor on Senior Night at Matthew Knight Arena.
